On June 2, local resident Lydia Nuttall interviewed with the Utah State Board of Education Nominating and Recruiting Committee at the State Senate Building.  She was one of seven local residents who applied to fill the four-year State School Board District 1 position, and the only local to progress to the interview round of the process.

Utah State Auditor John Dougall, Morgan County Attorney Jann Farris and local businessman John  Barber recently endorsed Lars Birkeland in his campaign for the State Senate seat against opponent and fellow Republican Ann Millner.

Local resident Lars L. Birkeland has announced he intends to file for the Republican nomination for the State Senate.  He hopes to get Republican delegate’s nod to fill the District 18 seat that Sen. Stuart Reid does not intend to seek re-election for.

U.S. Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rep. Rob Bishop (UT-1) announced that both the Senate and House have approved funding for the construction of a new maintenance hangar at Hill Air Force Base for the F-35 stealth fighter jet. Operational maintenance will be performed inside the hangar by the 388th Fighter Wing based at Hill.

Morgan voters went to the polls yesterday and voted down the proposed vote local levy by a wide margin. 2,485 votes were cast, a 45% voter turnout. 885 (36%) were cast in favor and 1,600 (64%) voted against. The vote was fairly consistent across all precincts. The breakdown by precinct is as follows:

On May 14 a new Utah law takes effect that bans teen drivers from using a cell phone while driving. House Bill 103 sponsored by Rep. Lee Perry and Senate sponsor, Lyle Hillyard, is designed to protect new drivers from distraction as they develop and hone their driving skills.

Dan Liljenquist visited Morgan this week.  Liljenquist is running for the U.S. Senate seat opposing Orrin Hatch for the Republican nomination.  Liljenquist is hoping for a repeat of what happened to Bob Bennett when he was replaced at the Republican convention with Mike Lee in 2010.

This year, students at Mountain Green and Morgan Elementary School have intensified their focus on personal expression and the writing process.  It is my pleasure to feature an essay by fourth grade student, Kate Korth.  Kate’s essay provides an exemplary example of what school, home, and student can accomplish when we work together!
