Cries of sadness could be heard all over town from the lack of Independence Day festivities.  Becky Shaw heard that call and came to the rescue.  In a single bound she picked up the heavy torch and took on the daunting task of planning an entire Fourth of July celebration in just a few weeks.
Thankfully, many people stepped up and volunteered to be her sidekicks.  You may have seen someone running around town handing out parade flyers or throwing together last-minute floats.  If you see them without their capes, please assist them with this crazy undertaking.  If you would like to enter a float in the parade, there is still time!

As you made your way through Morgan City this week, one couldn’t help but notice all the red shirts around town.
Every year, the Washington Heights Church picks a community to serve.  The church has several mission programs overseas that members participate in, but members who couldn’t afford to travel across the globe wanted to affect change in their local communities.
This desire to serve and “share God’s love” sparked the original “Serve Ogden” efforts.  Last year “Serve Ogden” became “Serve Bountiful,” and this year “Serve Morgan” was born.

Whether by starting a talk with song in front of a large crowd or by towering over others with a 6’7” stature, David Glover is sure to stand out. His comedic talent and genuine personality have influenced many who call him a great friend. He loves to laugh and joke, and is often described as quite the “character.” His wife, Heidi, kids she was born talentless with only the ability to talk and smile. Smile and talk she does and in so doing claims just as many hearts.

“It’s all about family” is a fitting motto for the Skinner household. Joey and Lisa Skinner have been blessed with four wonderful children:  Shantelle (married to husband Nate), Colby (currently serving a mission in Mexico), Cameron (a high school senior), and Tucker (eighth grade). A new highlight in the Skinner family has been the addition of Shantelle and Nate’s baby girl, Brielle. Joey and Lisa love their new role as grandparents.

James Wilson Francis (Jim) quietly left this earthly life on Thursday, Dec. 27 surrounded by his loving family.  As one poet said, “As when a lordly cedar, green with bough, goes down with a great shout upon the hill, and leaves a lonesome place against the sky.”  So it will be with Jim. We will all sorely miss him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was born in Ogden, Utah on Christmas day, Dec. 25, 1949, to Homer Wilson Francis and Marie Rich Francis. He was raised and educated in Morgan and graduated from Morgan High School where he was involved in the sports programs, especially football.

Pamala Sutton Bindrup has lived in Utah since she was 5 years old—first in Washington Terrace and then Mountain Green.   She and her three sisters were raised in the Terrace.  Her father was a linotype operator for the Standard-Examiner.  She remembers when she was a child going down to the newspaper office, and he would run a slug with her name on it which could be printed with ink.  When computers replaced linotypes, her father retired.  She said that the keyboard for the linotype was totally different than a computer keyboard. Her mother managed S & H Green Stamps, which was on Harrison Blvd.

Pioneer Day is the perfect time to pull out family books of remembrance and journals.  I did just that this past week.  It pulled me in and reminded me of grandparents who have been gone for many years.  Two hours later I had read many pages and reminisced about the time I spent with my grandmother before she died.  What I did not expect to find, although I knew my grandparents were both born in Morgan, was a history of Enterprise.  It was a surprising history to me. My grandmother, Martha Vera Mecham Ogden, recorded many of her memories and this  was among her writings.

FamilySearch has quietly published free access to all of the United States Census, just as the 1940 project gets seriously underway.  More than a year ago FamilySearch announced a joint project with Ancestry.com to improve the currently published censuses.  Ancestry provided their index to the censuses and volunteers at FamilySearch did a second index of all the names.  The results were then arbitrated to create a better quality index.  FamilySearch created a new set of higher quality digital images from the original microfilm for many of  the years as well.

When you drive by old homes in Morgan County, do you ever wonder how long they have been there and what tales they could tell?  One beautiful old home I have always admired is “The Hubbard House” on 5648  W. Old Hwy Rd., Mountain Green which is 85 years old.  The home was originally built by the Ostler family in 1927.

The majority of information about the Thornleys, Stuarts, and Ostlers is taken from Mountain Green, the Beautiful.  Additional information was provided by Carol Warner Ralphs, Bob Poll, Bob Huerta and Don Hubbard and the Morgan Co. Historical Society.

Reed Wilde was born in his grandfather’s home on the ranch in Croydon in 1928. The doctor hadn’t arrived yet, so the visiting teachers attended to his delivery. He attended school in Devil’s Slide by riding in a horse drawn wagon until the 2nd grade when they finally got a bus. But it only went as far as the pavement, so Reed had to walk half a mile to catch it. When Reed was in the 3rd grade, they got electricity. When he was a junior in high school, they finally got indoor plumbing and a gas furnace when they moved to a larger home.

Compiled by Dana Wilde from the contributions of Sherolyn Gause, Evelyn Jones, Jamie Wilde, and Ryan Windley.

He later moved to Billings, Montana and then on to Salt Lake City to finish out high school. He always looked back with fondness on time spent on his uncle’s farm and the sweet fresh air which would eventually lead him and Barbara to Morgan. Barbara was born in Northern Minnesota. When she was 5 years old her family moved to Mesa, Arizona. It was there she met Jerry one Thanksgiving day. Jerry was in the service and had come home to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The summer of 1952 Mary Ellen was dating a local boy who was excited to have his older cousin come visit.   The two 20 year olds came up with plans for Harold who was 24 and on leave from the United States Air force.  They wanted to go on a couple of double dates, but the only available girl was only 16 so they decided to have Mary Ellen go out with Harold and the other two would go out together.  The foursome went to a dance at Lagoon, and two weeks to the day later Mary Ellen and Harold were married! The rest was history…

This season has been the best I have seen these boys play with their hearts.  As this season comes to an end, we see the tears of dedication and of sacrifice come to a halt.  The last region game against the Spanish Fork Don’s was a hard loss at 20 to 35. However it was fought well and the Morgan Varsity football made some very strategic plays and grew together in trusting each other, trusting the coaches, and showing unity as a team. Spanish Fork commented that this game and playing against the Morgan Trojans, was the toughest game they have played against all year.

Marjorie was born on September 4, 1925, in Stoddard, Utah to Jacob and Ruby Pentz. She grew up in Morgan, Utah, where she graduated from LDS Seminary and Morgan High School in 1943. Marjorie loved riding horses on their family farm, which eventually led to participation in the county fair rodeos, where she enjoyed riding bucking broncs and bareback. She often won the competitions, earning prizes including a saddle and bridle. She even attempted to ride a bull once in the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo, which led to a broken collar bone. She also enjoyed riding her pinto horse in parades, where they performed tricks for the crowd. She worked in the office of the Arsenal and at the Military base in Ogden, UT, and then began work at IBM. She married Eldon Smith in Coalville, Utah on April 4, 1947 and they were later sealed together for eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple.

Over the next few weeks I will provide a review of Record Managers. I will begin with RootsMagic.  RootsMagic has two products.  They have a free product called RootsMagic Essential and a more full featured product that sells for $29.95.  In my experience the $29.95 is well worth the cost.

As more people have begun using Macs (Apple’s personal computer) over the past few years I have often been asked if I could recommend a record manager for the Mac.  I have consistently replied that there are no good record managers for the Mac and that I run one of the Windows record managers in Parallels on my Mac.  Today I will change my reply.

I had not previously used Legacy Family Tree and my impressions from the beginning were very positive.  The screens are clean, uncluttered, easy to understand, and easy to navigate.  There is a free product and a premium version for $29.95.  As with most of these products, the premium version is worth the small additional investment.
