A huge reason we have so many individual success stories in our special education program at Morgan Middle School is because of the success of our peer tutor program.   These students play a vital role in the success of some of their fellow students.

After a Utah State basketball game Rob Colvin met Suzanne Udy for the first time. Rob who is from North Ogden, and Suzanne who is from Salt Lake City (a Skyline High School graduate), were both enrolled in the university. Rob knew he had met someone special and was immediately interested in getting to know her better. However, he didn’t have a scrap of paper or a pen with him to jot down her information.  Being the creative person that he is, Rob used an aluminum foil gum wrapper in his pocket to scratch down her phone number. It took two tries to make the phone call but fortunately he was able to find the right combination of numbers.

As parents we attend Parent/Teacher Conferences because we are concerned about our children. We want to know how they are doing in school socially, academically, and gain some insight into our children’s lives when they are away from home. Teachers dutifully tell us our child’s academic strengths, weaknesses, and provide some knowledge regarding social growth. At some point during the conference DIBELS scores are mentioned. The purpose of this article is to provide basic information regarding DIBELS so you, as parents/guardians, will have a better understanding of what DIBELS scores mean for your child. It is important to understand how DIBELS works so you will be better equipped to be your child’s advocate. So, what are DIBELS?

The growth of Morgan County has been of major focus the last few years. As a community, we have grown in population, opportunities, and challenges. Morgan County School District is no different. The district has been experiencing challenges, as well as many opportunities for growth and improvement in its schools due to our growth as a community. This applies to all areas of our schools including special education.

October has been selected as National School Principals Month.  The primary purpose for this designation is to recognize and honor the outstanding work of public school principals.  In Morgan we have the privilege of having six outstanding leaders directing our schools.  These individuals each portray unique leadership skills that when combined add enormous strength to the quality of our schools and the academic climate within those schools.

The Morgan School District and the State of Utah lost a great advocate for public education with the passing of Dr. K. Earl Ericksen.  Earl was a man of conviction who devoted a majority of his adult life to our youth and the educational systems that served them.

We are only a few weeks away from a brand new conference sponsored by FamilySearch, Ancestry, and the New England Historical Genealogical Society. The conference is called RootsTech and for those who enjoy genealogy and technology it will be a conference not to miss.  It will be held February 10-12 at the Salt Palace.

My experience as an educator spans 36 years, four school districts and two states. During this time of employment, it has been my pleasure to be associated with great students, wonderful parents and conscientious staff members. It has been said that if one chooses something he loves to do then he will never go to work for the rest of his life. There is no truer statement than this about my vocation.
