Dear Editor:
After attending the school administration/board presentation regarding their proposed levy for increasing property taxes, I think that they made a fine presentation.  However, I must disagree that it was entirely factual.
According to the county treasurer, they received $7.033 million from property taxes in 2012.  Education presently receives 71 percent of our property taxes.

The Morgan County Republican Party recently chose new party officers including Chairman Lars Birkeland, Vice Chairwoman Tina Cannon, Secretary Lydia Nuttall, Treasurer Pamela Smith and State Central Committee Member Kera Birkeland.

The Morgan School District brought in consultants to inform them how to get their tax levy approved.  They are certainly following the plan developed and strongly advised by Rich County and that is to bombard and propagandize the public with “it is all for the students, the students will suffer and be deprived unless we have more money.” Even one of our school board members has stated that the district may have to declare “bankruptcy” unless the levy is passed.  It appears to me that the district has learned very well from our present national political organizations and that perhaps even Obama could  probably pick up a few pointers from the school district and the school board.

Shelly Betz (Chair), Kandi Christiansen (Vice-Chair), Lydia Nuttall (Secretary) and Mike Madeo (Treasurer) commenced their new responsibilities for Morgan Empowered on October 11th for the 2011-2012 year.  Our Morgan community wishes to express appreciation for the dedicated service rendered by Lanelle Butterfield, Jennie Earl, and Brenda Crossley who were the previous chair, secretary and treasurer respectively of Morgan Empowered.

In documents by The Morgan County News obtained through  a Government Records Access Management Act (GRAMA) request  from the investigation into the actions of Garth Day, the former Morgan County Council Administrator, additional details of the actions of Day were revealed.

Garth Day, former County Council Administrator has been charged with forty three criminal charges.  Day has been being investigated for the past few months, and the investigation has finally reached the point at which charges are being filed.  Day has been served with 38 felony and 5 misdemeanors.  He has been subpeonaed to appear in the Second District Court in Morgan on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 9:00 a.m.

The County’s independent auditor reported in his findings in the council meeting on Tuesday.  The first item he reported upon was the Stoddard Bridge project.  Some questions had been raised about whether money had been appropriately handled and the council had asked for a special audit of these funds.

In a statement at the Morgan County Council meeting on Tuesday, Chairman Sid Creager announced that Morgan County Council Administrator Garth Day had been placed on unpaid administrative leave while an investigation is completed into improprieties with financial accounts.
