The holidays are filled with fun and tradition wherever you go, but very few communities have such a wide array of things you can participate in for free.   The city, local businesses and community members all pitch in to make sure that there are plenty of fall holiday memories made right here at home.

The Morgan County Council has agreed to purchase the former bus garage on State Street from the Morgan County School District for an undisclosed amount to be paid over a three-year period.
The facility will be used as storage for various county equipment including sheriff department and emergency vehicles. Presently, a majority of such equipment, valued at several hundred thousand dollars, is stored outside and subject to weather deterioration.
Chairwoman Tina Kelley cast one of two opposing votes, saying the county had other financial priorities such as replacing a boiler for the county building.

On Tuesday, June 19, Shaka Laka handed out over 500 samples of sunblock and chapstick with a retail value of well over $1,000. A tent set up across the street from the post office on State Street hosted the event.  This half day of generosity was spurred by an appeal to residents to vote for their company to qualify to be eligible to receive a $250,000 grant from “Mission: Small Business.” The contest requires 250 votes to be eligible to receive one of 12 grants offered from Chase and Living Social.  According to their website, the company is “based on the mainland in Utah, but we are all about the island style, kickin’ back, and just having fun.”  They also note that their products are made in the USA “on Da Biggah Island of Utah”

The areas of South Morgan and North Morgan were first settled in 1960-61, and were incorporated into Morgan City in 1868. Morgan’s business district had it origins along Young Street and State Street in South Morgan. Some of these first businesses included a mercantile and blacksmith shop. Although the business district was in South Morgan the main route into the area was located on the northeast side of Weber River. This created a dangerous situation to receive merchandise and supplies from out of the area. It was very hazardous to cross the river, especially in Spring prior to the first bridge over the river.

In the 1920’s Leo Carter operated a Texico Service station on the corner of State street and 700 East, in North Morgan. In this station he also stalked some candy items from 1 cent a piece to 5 cents each. At times when you had a penny, nickel or dime, you could find some children visiting Leo’s to buy a treat. There were two gas pumps one with regular gas, and the other with Ethel.

For more than half a century the Morgan School district bus facility has been located on State Street between Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn and Steph’s Drive-in.  Before dawn each morning, you see the parking lot full of buses warming up and getting ready for a day of transporting students. There is a precession of buses leaving in every direction alerting citizens that school will soon be in session.
