We have had a lot of success this year with our Science Olympiad program. The students worked hard for many months. I am so proud of their hard work and dedication. The following paragraphs explain what this program is about.

Peter Christensen, a student at Morgan Middle School, not only won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 10, 2012, he also earned a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.  The school-level bee, at which students answered oral and written questions on geography, was the first round in the annual National Geographic Bee.

The Morgan County Library is a great place for people to expand their minds, encourage creativity and explore places.  This kind of knowledge and growth should not be limited to the youth or the more mature, everyone should take advantage of this remarkable resource.

Let’s Catch a Leprechaun!

On March 16th, the third grade students from Mountain Green Elementary School participated in a Simple Machines Fair in preparation for catching Leprechauns that night.  Each student created his/her own machine using a pulley, wheel & axle, lever, inclined plane, screw, or wedge.  The students could use as many simple machines as they wanted for their catcher.  It was amazing to see the creativity displayed by the students and their understanding of how effective simple machines can be for catching the “wee folk.”

If meta data is not a term you have heard you are probably not alone.  It is a concept, however, that you will almost certainly have benefitted from if you have done any significant amount of genealogical work.  Meta data, simply put, is data about data.  The most common application of meta data in family history is indexed records of digital images.

Two weeks ago, I discussed getting started with family history. I outlined an approach that began with starting with what you know. By writing down what you know, looking at photographs and other items and connecting with other family members substantial family information can often be complied.

Julie Miller, a genealogist with whom I have worked over the past few years writes a column for The Broomfield Enterprise.  She recently wrote and article which started me thinking.  Her article focused on the fact that while the Internet is a great resource, not everything can be found online.
