Project Linus accepts donated new, handmade, washable blankets for military fallen soldiers as well as seriously ill and/or traumatized children, ages 0 to 18.  In previous years we were only able to accept blankets for children, but we are now expanding to teens, adults and families of fallen soldiers.

Morgan City has made a stride forward in coordinating community events.  This move involved hiring a new event coordinator to work with the city council in not only making sure that big events are successful, but assisting in day-to-day operations as well.

Many people who become involved in family history research look at what other people have already completed on their common lines and then begin research where the first blank appears. There is a reason that Grandma or Aunt Clara stopped where they did. It was hard research!

Family history is really exciting for those who do it. Those who have not been bitten by the bug may feel overwhelmed or disinterested. I love helping individuals begin their family history and always maintain that you can research like a professional even if you are not one. Simply learn to do it right the first time and fix it right for future generations, and you will have some great (fun and interesting) training material for them when they are ready to begin.

Young sluggers got the chance to rub shoulders with Morgan High School baseball coaches and players last weekend at the Trojan Century Center as part of a youth baseball skills clinic.   The coaches organized the clinic for players ages 8 to 14.  Approximately 30 current and former players were enlisted to keep the ratio of players to instructors low and to provide more one-on-one feedback.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is getting the mail. I love Christmas cards. Cards are such a wonderful part of the season, getting to hear from family and friends that we don’t have the opportunity to hang out with as much as we may like. I like the ones that are simply signed and I love the newsy Christmas letters too.

When working on your genealogy, remember to follow up on any mention of a funeral home. Their records provide researchers with information about the individual’s death and more. They may show just a few details or the minutia involved in planning a funeral down to what flowers were sent and any clothes or beautician services purchased by the deceased’s loved ones. Details like who paid for the funeral might help identify family members and their addresses. Ministers who are listed as performing the funeral service provide clues as to additional church records that you will want to locate and research.

Local artist John Pincock shares his passion for art not only with the students he inspires each day at Morgan High School, but also with the community as well by producing and selling beautiful handmade pieces of pottery. Ironically, while growing up in West Valley, Pincock was not particularly fond of art class. Throughout his time in elementary and junior high, Pincock found he had a hard time compressing 3D objects into two-dimensional projects. That all changed when he enrolled in a high school ceramics class.

As school bells are days away from ringing, children are gathering supplies from lists the schools have sent out.  While they are not mandatory, the items are purchased by able parents to ensure a successful year for their student.  Teachers have been readying classrooms for pupils throughout the district and thanks to generous citizens, a dozen classrooms will be well stocked without the burden falling on the teachers.

In the entertainment venue, summer hits have been largely centered around superheroes.  Locally, we have our own superheroes—those who volunteer countless hours and dollars to serve their community.
Cries of sadness could be heard all over town from the lack of Independence Day festivities.  Becky Shaw heard that call and came to the rescue.  In a single bound she picked up the heavy torch and took on the daunting task of planning an entire Fourth of July celebration in just a few weeks.
Thankfully, many people stepped up and volunteered to be her sidekicks.  You may have seen someone running around town handing out parade flyers or throwing together last-minute floats.  If you see them without their capes, please assist them with this crazy undertaking.  If you would like to enter a float in the parade, there is still time!

As many high school seniors are looking forward to their graduation this May, some previous graduates are looking back, way back. The Morgan School District will again be honoring past educators and employees of the district and their families at MHS commencement exercises and are looking for nominations.  Since 2008, 12 outstanding individuals have been honored for their service to the community in years past. Their names have been added to the stunning Trojan monument located just outside the MHS office. Their contributions and legacy should not be forgotten or go unappreciated. We are excited to recognize excellence from the past in the Morgan School District and look forward to the names of this year’s recipients to be included on the beautiful Trojan monument.

Morgan City, County, and Chamber of Commerce have been working throughout the year to develop a new website.  It has taken cooperation from the three parties to get the website ready to launch.  All three could see the potential benefits this website could provide to Morgan businesses and its residents.   “This has been a good thing,” Shelly Betz, city councilwoman stated.  She encourages everyone to go to the website and see what is actually available in Morgan.
