Cries of sadness could be heard all over town from the lack of Independence Day festivities.  Becky Shaw heard that call and came to the rescue.  In a single bound she picked up the heavy torch and took on the daunting task of planning an entire Fourth of July celebration in just a few weeks.
Thankfully, many people stepped up and volunteered to be her sidekicks.  You may have seen someone running around town handing out parade flyers or throwing together last-minute floats.  If you see them without their capes, please assist them with this crazy undertaking.  If you would like to enter a float in the parade, there is still time!

Seventeen years ago a teaching job brought Doug and Jane Curfew to Morgan. Since then, they have had the opportunity to serve many Morgan children. Doug, a fifth grade teacher at Morgan Elementary, plays a very influential role in the lives of these young children as they begin to make the transition from elementary to middle school. He really enjoys the students he teaches and they in turn enjoy him. The students especially enjoy Doug’s love of ‘80s music as they get to partake of it in the classroom.

Davis County Attorney’s Office declines to prosecute

The Morgan County police officer involved in a Davis County shooting Nov. 25 has been identified.  While the Davis County Attorney’s Office says Morgan Sherriff’s Sgt. Daniel Scott Peay’s use of force was “not justified” by Utah law, Davis County Attorney Troy S. Rawlings declined to prosecute Peay.
In a two-page memo to Morgan County Sheriff Blaine Breshears, Rawlings said Peay’s use of deadly force “does not squarely fit with the letter, scope and intent” of Utah law.  However, Rawlings said a jury would likely not find Peay guilty of a crime.
“We believe a unanimous jury would not convict Sergeant Peay of a crime when presented with all of the evidence,” Rawlings said in the memo.

The Morgan community mourns the loss this week of a great leader, service man and friend.  Don Mathews passed away in the early hours on Friday, Nov. 23, of heart failure. Don was born in Cedar City on Nov. 8, 1953, to George Clark and Marcelene Mathews.  Later his family moved to Orem, where he attended school and graduated from Orem High. An active child, Don especially enjoyed playing soccer and was able to be the team’s goalie. He loved to snow ski in the winter and would often catch the bus to Sundance to enjoy a day out on the slopes. Don especially enjoyed listening to radio broadcaster Paul Harvey and as a child he would run home from school to hear Paul quip his famous tag line “now the rest of the story.” He was well liked as a child and quite the character. He would often be found hanging out with his brother Jeff. He loved to make his family laugh and in turn, they found enjoyment in making Don laugh so hard soda would come out of his nose.

Many contests and challenges were held during the three days at our county fair.  The most recently added game to the fair line up was the Cantaloupe Chuckin’ event.  Inspiration came when 12-year-old Easton Turner was watching a favorite show about pumpkin chucking.  He told his mom this event needed to be part of the fair.  His mom, Kim Turner, is in charge of the activities and games at the fair and she agreed that it would be a fun addition to the fair.  Easton started making plans with his friend Talon Thorton.  They compiled their favorite designs for catapults and took their favorite parts from each to build their ideal thrower.

After a six-year hiatus, the demolition derby came back to Morgan County. Historically, Morgan has had a rich tradition of hosting demolition derbies. Although the derby this year started out small, we were fortunate to be able to bring it back. Organizers are hopeful that last Thursday’s event will have increased interest not only from spectators, but also for future drivers who want to test their driving skills in the arena. Hopefully this was the first of many, and through the years it will be able to grow.

Elaine was working at American Optical in Salt Lake, and a friend told her she wanted Elaine to write to her cousin who was stationed in Korea. She started writing him and when he would come home from leave, they would date. He served a total of 3 years in the Marine Corp--13 months on the front lines in Korea.  After his tour overseas, he was stationed in 29 Palms and in San Diego.  He even participated in the Nuclear Bomb Tests in Nevada.  He said that he saw and felt the atomic blast; the troops were half way out in the dessert when they were told that the wind had shifted and to turn back to the trenches.  He said you could see the Joshua trees smoldering.

Reed Wilde was born in his grandfather’s home on the ranch in Croydon in 1928. The doctor hadn’t arrived yet, so the visiting teachers attended to his delivery. He attended school in Devil’s Slide by riding in a horse drawn wagon until the 2nd grade when they finally got a bus. But it only went as far as the pavement, so Reed had to walk half a mile to catch it. When Reed was in the 3rd grade, they got electricity. When he was a junior in high school, they finally got indoor plumbing and a gas furnace when they moved to a larger home.

Compiled by Dana Wilde from the contributions of Sherolyn Gause, Evelyn Jones, Jamie Wilde, and Ryan Windley.

When she was 5 years old her family moved to Mesa, Arizona. It was there she met Jerry one Thanksgiving day. Jerry was in the service and had come home to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Doug passed away unexpectedly November 4, 2011 of cardiac and respiratory problems at a hospital in Morelia, Mexico, near the city he called his home, Patzcuaro, Mexico with his sisters by his side.   Anyone that knew Doug knew he was an intelligent, eccentric free spirit who loved to travel and hated to be tied down.  He had friends and acquaintances all over the world and definitely lived life on his own terms.  He moved to Patzcuaro, Mexico about 2 years ago and fell in love with the city, the people and everything about the simple lifestyle he enjoyed there.  He is now flying high, no longer tied to a body that was failing him and surely enjoying new adventures every day.

George and Carol Lancaster were both born in 1947, no more than one city away from each other; George was born in Murray, Carol in Salt Lake.  George was raised in Crescent, attended and graduated from Jordan High School while Carol attended three different high schools, Olympus, Hillcrest, and graduated from Cyprus; her family moved around to different areas of Salt Lake.  It was in the ninth grade when they finally met each other.  George sat behind her in Social Studies class. Carol and George had become such good friends that as Carol was moving around, George was always making sure he found her so they could keep in touch.  Over the course of four or five years these two occasionally dated, corresponded by letters back and forth and developed a very close relationship.  This close relationship, in fact, later resulted in marriage in the year 1966.

Twenty one year old Daniel Butler from Durrant, Oklahoma has always cared for the safety and well being of others and had a great interest in how animals can help save people’s lives.  This interest came at a very young age when he and his family were driving down a country road in Oklahoma and noticed an elderly lady walking out on a dirt path in the middle of nowhere, looking a little disoriented.  They asked her where she was going, and she told them that she was walking to Walmart. There was not a Walmart anywhere for miles. They returned her back home to her grateful husband.

It was shortly after this incident Daniel was watching COPS on television and a similar story came on about an elderly person with dementia  who had been lost. They used a canine unit to help find the person. This began turning the wheels for Daniel and caused him to wonder how he could become involved working with dogs to help find lost people on land or water.
