Drifting snow added to the ambiance as the community gathered around to count down the lighting of the Christmas tree in the center of Commercial Street at the end of the fourth annual Ol’ Time Christmas celebration on Saturday, Dec. 7.  The city street looked like a scene right out of a Hallmark Christmas movie where neighbors, friends and family gather around to celebrate together.

At Thanksgiving time, we often think about things we are grateful for in our lives.  Being thankful is a wonderful thing, but the best way to show gratitude is to focus on the “giving” in Thanksgiving.

Morgan’s special needs group brought a measure of unexpected joy to mothers living in an Ogden domestic violence shelter during Mother’s Day weekend.
For the past couple of weeks, the group had a collection bin set up at Hinds Quick Stop, where more than 100 purses were donated by members of the community.  On May 9, the group met at the Milton Church and in assembly-line fashion, stuffed each purse with lip balm, combs, sewing kits, vanity kits, hand sanitizer, lotion and tissues.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Lion’s Club has invited Santa to visit Morgan County.  The Boy’s and Girl’s committee puts the event together, but everyone pitches in to help.  Candy bags from the Sweet’s factory are put together during the regular Lion’s Club meeting to pass out to each child and after they visit with Santa, hay rides are provided by the Thurston family and their Clydesdales.  The Lion’s Club would like to thank the fire department for providing Santa’s transportation to the event, Morgan County for the use of the building and for taking care of clean-up and The Morgan County News for advertising. See photos on pages 6 & 7.

Luckily, we have had a mild winter so far because not everyone has been visited by the traveling home insulation vans that have covered the Morgan territory. In fact not everyone has four walls and a roof they can call their own.  St. Anne’s Center shelters hundreds of Top of Utah’s homeless each year.

Some of the professional literature on adolescent reading motivation suggests that teenagers are disinterested or non-motivated readers and as they move through the adolescent years their motivation to read diminishes.  On the other hand, some teens are willing to read but get discouraged from reading for various reasons.  With this being said, it is obvious that the middle school years are a critical juncture in adolescents’ lives where their reading actions or inactions can have long-lasting benefits or consequences.  Literacy plays a vital role in a person’s success throughout life, and motivation plays an integral role in the acquisition of literacy skills.  Therefore, motivational factors cannot be overlooked in learning situations, particularly during these critical learning years.

As parents we attend Parent/Teacher Conferences because we are concerned about our children. We want to know how they are doing in school socially, academically, and gain some insight into our children’s lives when they are away from home. Teachers dutifully tell us our child’s academic strengths, weaknesses, and provide some knowledge regarding social growth. At some point during the conference DIBELS scores are mentioned. The purpose of this article is to provide basic information regarding DIBELS so you, as parents/guardians, will have a better understanding of what DIBELS scores mean for your child. It is important to understand how DIBELS works so you will be better equipped to be your child’s advocate. So, what are DIBELS?
