Almost half a million people visited the Ogden Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during its two-month open house, and 16,000 youth joined in a cultural celebration the day before its rededication.  Such a massive event takes many hands, and more than 50 Morgan adults rose to the occasion.
Porterville resident and former Morgan County Councilman Craig G. Fisher, named to the fifth quorum of the Seventy in 2010, oversaw the temple’s public open house and cultural celebration as chairman of the church’s rededication committee.  His wife, Julia, was at his side through much of his labors.
After being released as bishop of the Enterprise ward this spring, Brent Halls was called as Fisher’s executive secretary specifically for the Ogden Temple rededication events.  His responsibilities included coordinating communication and updates with 73 stake presidents and other assigned representatives.

After more than three years, Morgan residents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can now begin attending their own temple.  The Ogden Temple was closed for extensive renovation in April of 2011, and hundreds of Morgan youth celebrated the rededication of the temple at the Dee Events Center on Saturday.
More than 800 youth from Morgan County’s two stakes participated in the event either singing in the choir, dancing the hoedown or participating in various other aspects of the hour-and-a-half program.
“The Morgan and Morgan North stakes were among the leading stakes with the most youth participating,” said Brent Halls, Enterprise resident and executive secretary of the Ogden Temple Committee.  “The Morgan stakes were absolutely great in their support—from the very beginning.  Some stakes struggled to get the vision and to get their youth motivated,” but not Morgan!
The church’s prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, was on hand when the Morgan youth performed.  Elders Jeffrey R. Holland and David A. Bednar accompanied him.

Everyone has a story to tell. It’s too bad in this day and age that we often do not take time to get to know our neighbors and learn their interesting experiences.  Most people are reticent to share their lives, but a visit with Ken Farr of Mountain Green is both entertaining and touching. Like any good story-teller, Farr can have you laughing one minute and shedding a tear the next.

Last October, mother Dusty Morgan desperately needed the aid of emergency medical service workers for her toddler, Gus, when he was found unconscious and not breathing after falling into a horse trough.  Fortunately, those workers went above and beyond and the story had a happy ending.
“Simply said, they saved more than a life, they saved our whole family,” said Dusty Morgan, a Coalville native and Morgan resident.  “They did everything they needed to give him the best, and were a great example of trust and team work.”
It was such a great example that the incident received state-wide attention from the Utah Department of Health as well as the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness.  At the July 9, Utah EMS Awards Ceremony, the Morgan County emergency was honored as the state’s outstanding performance for a rural emergency medical incident.

Every year hundreds of thousands of Americans celebrate Independence Day with a big bang of fireworks.  You can find stands on just about every street corner during the holiday, but where you choose to buy your sparklers and fountains makes a difference to one local family.
Morgan’s neighborhood firework stand is sponsored by Acme Discount Fireworks, but run by Morgan residents Jaime and Gina Grandpre.
Shopping local helps unite our community. “Knowing that you are supporting your neighbors and friends, gives us all a sense of pride in where we live,” commented Gina.
In support of shopping local, the family decided to change locations this year.  Instead of being housed in the parking lot of Ridley’s, the firework stand will be located in the lot next to Front Street Gifts and Crossfit Unknown.  This lot is owned by a Utah resident, resulting in a much better deal on the lease of the property, according to the Grandpre family.

During the course of the public debate on the necessity of a Voted Local Levy in the Morgan School District, we often times  forget the larger picture of the financial struggles faced by the state and most districts.  State Superintendent of Schools Martell Menlove stated in a community meeting in Morgan County last month that Morgan School District is not alone in facing financial challenges when it comes to balancing their budgets this year.  A quick review of the state’s newspapers and television stations and you will see many headlines, news stories and editorials dealing with school finance.  One example can be found on the editorial page of the Sunday, June 2, issue of the Ogden Standard Examiner.

Morgan’s special needs group brought a measure of unexpected joy to mothers living in an Ogden domestic violence shelter during Mother’s Day weekend.
For the past couple of weeks, the group had a collection bin set up at Hinds Quick Stop, where more than 100 purses were donated by members of the community.  On May 9, the group met at the Milton Church and in assembly-line fashion, stuffed each purse with lip balm, combs, sewing kits, vanity kits, hand sanitizer, lotion and tissues.

As Morgan County residents watch as the last patches of snow melt away, they often wish for better weather and the luxuries of summer.  Beautiful lawns, trees that are healthy enough to let children climb in while bearing delicious fruits, and vegetables overflowing onto our neighbors’ properties are often things people dream about but think they must wait until warm weather to prepare.  Now is the time to begin planning and preparing for your summer gardening and fall feast.

In the spirit of the holiday season, some amateur radio (ham) operators have found a way to bring joy to disadvantaged and shut-in children.  Thanks to the world-wide range of amateur radio equipment, it’s possible for hams to communicate with other hams almost anywhere on earth, including Santa Claus at the North Pole.  Thus was born the North Pole Network (NPN) which purports to use special satellite links to allow kids to talk one-on-one with St. Nick.

Melanie and Eric Moore and their family collected over 100 bags of items to be donated to St. Anne’s homeless shelter in Ogden.  They filled a trailer with clothes, books, used and new toys, blankets, gloves, hygiene items, diapers and other types of donations.  “Anything people brought we took,” Melanie explained.  The shelter needs warm items to hand out during the cold months.  They love to have toys to hand out for holidays and birthdays.  The shelter accepts any kind of donation.  St. Anne’s goal is to help individuals and families move into permanent housing, so any items that are not used at the shelter are used to help people when they accomplish that goal.  People are generally moving with no possessions and these items help them get established.

Morgan County was hit with more than six inches overnight.  Teachers who commute from Ogden were stuck in the canyon and buses were stuck in the snow, so Morgan Elementary and Mountain Green Elementary were both closed for the day.  This is a rare occurrence in Morgan, so students were thrilled and kids all through the county pulled out their sleds and made the most of it.
The first snowfall of the year is historically bad for driving conditions, which makes it especially important to slow down and drive carefully.

Creative and ambitious individuals that have a passion for what they do were found in abundance at this week’s Morgan farmer’s market. Each vendor has a unique story and purpose for being involved.
One such vendor is Davis Produce. Davis Produce offers a variety of fresh grown produce from their greenhouse. Tina Davis, owner, is glad to be back for another year and says she enjoys the people of Morgan.
Handcrafted and homemade items from Carol Marshall included parchment crafted book markers designed with calligraphy ink and paint on a type of paper known as velum. Marshall has done this craft for over 10 years and she enjoys it the most. Recently retired, she found herself not content. To broaden her interests, she discovered craft books and learned how to make bracelets and earrings.

One of summer’s greatest joys is long hot days filled with a dip in the pool.  Cannon balls, splashing children calling out marco polo all bring back floods of memories to most Americans who have experienced a setting similar to this sometime in their life.  Much of our summertime activities revolve around water.  From relaxing on the shore of Pineview, or camping next to a creek in the Uintahs, most of us will come into contact with water.  With extra precaution, these activities can give us a lifetime of memories and a scrapbook full of photos.

When you drive by old homes in Morgan County, do you ever wonder how long they have been there and what tales they could tell?  One beautiful old home I have always admired is “The Hubbard House” on 5648  W. The majority of information about the Thornleys, Stuarts, and Ostlers is taken from Mountain Green, the Beautiful.  Additional information was provided by Carol Warner Ralphs, Bob Poll, Bob Huerta and Don Hubbard and the Morgan Co. Historical Society.
