On Sept. 15, 2014, community members sat in the shade of two giant poplar trees at Riverside Park to honor Albert Douglas Dickson, pioneer of the Dickson family here in Morgan County, by adding his name to the pioneer monument at the park’s entrance.
The memorial speech was given by David D. Dickson, a grandson.  Albert was born while his parents were visiting his maternal grandmother in Porter County, Indiana.  The Dickson family had been residents of Nauvoo, Illinois, at the time of Albert’s birth.

On April 12, the Sons of the Utah Pioneers made a trek to the Salt Lake City Cemetery.  The tour was hosted by President Calvin and Lynette Stephens.  The life accounts of these great men and women buried in the cemetery are a tribute to our ancestry and a credit to the inhabitants of these mountain valleys.

If you have Mormon immigrant ancestors there is a resource of which you may be unaware.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has substantial records of those who travelled to Utah during the period when the saints were commanded to gather to Utah.

At the entrance of Riverside Park, there is a big rock monument with “Early Morgan Pioneers” engraved at the top.  Under the engraving there is a list of some amazing people who have shaped Morgan County into what it is today.

To get the full experience, it is best to follow the self-guided auto tour brochure put out by the Morgan Historical Society some three years ago.

As a history buff and native of Morgan County, I was surprised that I had never been on the “Mormon Flat Dirt Road,” as it is named in a self-guided auto tour of the Hastings Cutoff through the county.

One of the most memorable activities for the fourth grade students at Mountain Green Elementary School is the Utah History Fair. As part of the fourth grade curriculum, they study the history and origins of the state of Utah, from Native Americans, to the first Mormon pioneers and settlers.

Monday, February 20th the Sons of the Utah Pioneers had the very enjoyable opportunity to be addressed by Robert Woodford during their monthly meeting at Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn.  Calvin Stephens invited him to be our guest speaker which he graciously accepted.  He discussed the ongoing efforts of publishing the Joseph Smith Papers both in book form and on line.  He reported that there are many misconceptions based on incorrect readings of these documents.
