Brave firefighters commended for their efforts

On Sunday, July 20 the late afternoon sky was lit with an incredible lightning storm.  As the storm raged and passed, it left quite a shock as three fires were started at nearly the same time across the valley.
One fire started near the Croydon cemetery and burned approximately 120 acres before being put out.  This fire was primarily handled by the Summit County Fire Department, but crews from Morgan were requested.
Another fire burned in the Norwoods area along Highway 66.  Morgan Fire Chief Dave Rich received a call from a resident who had been sitting on their front porch and watched as lightening started this blaze.  He called the fire in on his way to the fire station.
As most of the fire crews headed to this fire that eventually burned six acres, the last call came in for the Tunnel Hollow area, the canyon heading towards Taggarts.  Crews were diverted from the Norwood fire, and as the crews reached Round Valley, it became apparent they would not be able to reach this fire.

David Allen Rich the I, II and III, all of Morgan, are fired up about a goal they have been working on for the past few years.
The trio has a burning desire to restore a 1941 Ford Howe Fire Truck to its original state.  While it is a work in process, they have made great progress and they showed off their efforts at the Morgan 4th of July parade.  They plan to enter the antique truck in the fair parade this summer.
In 1965, a young Dave Rich I went on his very first fire call.  He took the Ford Howe truck to a barn fire on Young Street near East Canyon Creek.  The Ford Howe was retired after only a few years and replaced with a 1967 La France; unlike Rich who has dedicated nearly 50 years of service without being retired or replaced.  Through the years of service to our community and working with different engines, Rich still fondly remembers that first truck above the rest.

Community lends many helpful hands

In the late afternoon of Saturday March 22, Kelly Pentz, an employee of Polaris, went into the shop behind the Polaris Dealership and Wilkinson Construction offices, where he noticed water on the floor coming from the broiler room. This unusual sight was accompanied by the smell of smoke. He quickly surveyed the boiler room where there were no apparent flames.
As Pentz went upstairs, he found the source of the smoke and began to dowse the flames with a fire extinguisher. He was then joined by TJ McMillan and Garrett Kippen, who also work for Polaris.

Utah’s official fire season begins and the open burning season officially ends each year on May 31. Fire danger will increase rapidly as warmer and drier weather develops. So far, tests are showing that despite the rainy spring, moisture levels in grassy fuels are below average. So far this spring, several debris burns have blown out of control, escaped and become wildfires burning private and public land. As of June 1, open burning is prohibited without a permit.

Fire officials are issuing a strong caution as warmer weather arrives. Several field clearing and debris burns in Morgan, Summit, Salt Lake, Uintah, San Juan and Grand counties have escaped, requiring action by fire fighters. Fire managers say these fires were all preventable and they recommend taking some simple precautions to safely and successfully burn.

Loydene Berg and her son, PJ, lost their home to an electrical fire last month on Sept. 4.  The home was a complete loss.  This included her Yamaha Grand Piano which had a lot of sentiment attached to it from her late father and her husband Peter, who was murdered 12 years ago at Chevy’s Restaurant in Salt Lake City.  The home was also not insured at the time of the fire, due to a suspension in the insurance coverage until a rain gutter was replaced. The work had been done, but had not been reinstated before the fire destroyed the home.

On Nov. 1, Morgan’s digit to analog television conversion was finalized with $71,000 worth of equipment installation. However, older TV sets are still having problems displaying the three KBYU channels, or channel 11.
Morgan County Councilwoman Ronda Kippen advised residents to rescan their television in order to ensure that channel 11 is reprogrammed properly. Those residents with newer television sets that automatically rescan whenever they are turned on likely have no problems receiving channel 11.

Salt Lake City, May 25, 2011 – Utah residents who donate blood with the American Red Cross in June will be eligible to enter a drawing to win Stadium of Fire tickets and dinner in an Orem restaurant.

JaLae Thompson, donor recruitment manager for the Red Cross in Utah, explained: “Collecting blood is challenging during the summer,” she said, “especially around the holidays.  People are busy vacationing and celebrating and forget that there is a constant need for blood in Utah’s hospitals.”

The Morgan ambulance service in the County has a long history helping those in need. In 1943, a fire in a business with an apartment above injured Norma Williams. She and her husband were rescued from the fire, but Morgan had no ambulance service and no medical facility so she was taken to the old post office building on the corner of Commercial Street and 125 North. She waited until the next morning for an ambulance to arrive from Ogden. She was transported to the hospital, but later died.
