At their latest meeting, the Morgan County School Board adopted a new budget for the 2013-14 school year and did not vote to increase the board local levy.

“I think the community spoke loud and clear they didn’t want taxes increased,” Boardmember Ken Durrant said.  “They were pretty emphatic.”

Soon after parents buy the new school clothes, pack the backpacks, and pay registration fees, they will be facing another school-related expense: new taxes.  On a split 3-2 vote, the Morgan County School Board narrowly passed a tax that will increase the property tax on a $200,000 home $14.96 a year.

The Morgan School District’s financial situation is so complicated, it is going to take a combination of many options to solve, or even squeak by from year to year, school board members agreed.  The solution rests on raising taxes, a voted leeway, and possibly even more cuts that could directly affect the classroom.

Although the Morgan County School Board voted to dip into pay-as-you-go funds to balance the “bare bones” budget this year, they are promising the tax payers a tax increase next year.

The graduating class of 2012 will see the end of a long-standing tradition at Morgan High School.  The class presidency requested that the graduation ceremony be moved from the Morgan High School Auditorium to Weber State University due to the growing graduating class size and limited space at the high school.

In the December 14, 2010, issue of the Daily Herald in Provo, a State Senator from Utah County made some insinuating comments that have certainly created a stir.  The remarks were demeaning towards local boards of education across the state and the individuals who serve in that capacity. May I share with readers of The Morgan County News some facts about the Morgan County Board of Education?

Ken Durrant is in his third term serving on the Morgan School Board and is loving the experience. “ I have enjoyed every minute of it “ says Durrant. He is a lifelong resident of Morgan. His father was mayor of Morgan City and he graduated from Morgan High School. Durrant and his wife, Kris, have four children, three of which still live in Morgan, and eleven grandchildren.
