Brave firefighters commended for their efforts

On Sunday, July 20 the late afternoon sky was lit with an incredible lightning storm.  As the storm raged and passed, it left quite a shock as three fires were started at nearly the same time across the valley.
One fire started near the Croydon cemetery and burned approximately 120 acres before being put out.  This fire was primarily handled by the Summit County Fire Department, but crews from Morgan were requested.
Another fire burned in the Norwoods area along Highway 66.  Morgan Fire Chief Dave Rich received a call from a resident who had been sitting on their front porch and watched as lightening started this blaze.  He called the fire in on his way to the fire station.
As most of the fire crews headed to this fire that eventually burned six acres, the last call came in for the Tunnel Hollow area, the canyon heading towards Taggarts.  Crews were diverted from the Norwood fire, and as the crews reached Round Valley, it became apparent they would not be able to reach this fire.

The Trojans followed up last year’s six-point overtime victory over the Wildcats at South Summit with a thrilling, down-to-the-wire 34-27 win in Morgan Friday night.
Morgan junior defensive back Kade Carrigan’s interception on the 10-yard line with no time left on the clock preserved the Morgan win.
“That was wild. I feel like I played in that one,” said Morgan Coach Kovi Christiansen, who appeared physically and emotionally spent after this one. “They (the Wildcats) are fantastic. I don’t know if there is another 2A team to compare with them. They are awesome.”

One walking trail in Mountain Green parallels old highway, directly east of the Mountain Green exit. This walking trail was a community effort and took the dedicated work of many individuals to make it a reality.   In 1993, it was recognized by members of the community that a safety hazard existed for young children, walkers, and bike riders who traveled from Monte Verde, Polls and the Highlands to the Old Farm Market or from one subdivision to the other. Pedestrians had to walk on the edge of old highway road which is the main thoroughfare through Mountain Green and connects to Trappers Loop. Especially because of the increased traffic from Ogden Valley due to the completion of Trappers Loop road and the fact that this traffic had to use the old highway in order to connect with the interstate, an effort was made to solve the safety hazard—by creating a walking path.

This program, known as “Teacher Feature,”  is announced each Tuesday morning as part of KSL Newsradio’s Grant and Amanda Show. This week Morgan was honored when Morgan Elementary school’s own first grade teacher Mrs. Christine Tyrrell was picked.  Monday afternoon she was highlighted in an assembly to focus on what a wonderful  influence she has been. Member Mathews was voted in as Vice Chair of the Council unanimously.

He told me about time he was hauling hay, his elevator was up Lost Creek, and all his boys were busy with sheep and other stuff, his sister Jewell’s young boys helped him. He said he got up on the truck load of hay and pitched it all off onto his haystack for them, with a pitch fork.

“If there’s a will there’s a way,” is the Thomsons’ parting words, or motto, after sharing their story of love and life. They got in Janet’s 1931 Ford Model A (a birthday present from Jay) and drove off to get ready for a dinner engagement.

I met them at their hangar at the Morgan County Airport. Inside, Janet introduced “these are Jay’s toys,” which consists of a motorcycle; a restored 1946 Fairchild airplane; a well polished motor boat; and a small plane for grandchildren to pretend to fly. A work area for his tools to keep the “toys” in running order, and for convenience, a sitting area with a 1927 antique refrigerator nearby with cold drinks and a cookie jar that resembles a fisherman’s basket, full of Ginger Snap cookies, on the coffee table.

It was a somber atmosphere in the courtroom as Garth Day entered with his attorney, Amy Hugie.  As U.S. Magistrate Judge Samuel Alba read each one of the six charges aloud to him, Day responded with a weak and barely audible whisper.  With each charge presented to the defendant, the judge confirmed that Day understood it and also , understood that the government is required to prove their case against him beyond a reasonable doubt.  Day was also informed that if he changed his plea to guilty, he would waive his rights to a trial and therefore relieve the government from having to prove their case.  In each case Day responded in the affirmative.
