With the beginning of the school year upon us, there seems to be a growing concern in the community about speeding problems.  Commuter time overlaps school bus schedules and inevitably, people will be in a hurry during prime commuting time.  However, residents need to remember that there are precious little ones lining these streets during these times as well.

After a six-year hiatus, the demolition derby came back to Morgan County. Historically, Morgan has had a rich tradition of hosting demolition derbies. Although the derby this year started out small, we were fortunate to be able to bring it back. Organizers are hopeful that last Thursday’s event will have increased interest not only from spectators, but also for future drivers who want to test their driving skills in the arena. Hopefully this was the first of many, and through the years it will be able to grow.

Setting goals can help people move forward in their lives; however, one of the main reasons for not meeting goals is not having a doable plan. A goal should be SMART -- specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely with a plan to achieve it. Consider these ideas when setting weight loss goals.

Every year, Morgan County is overrun by an aggressive weed called Dyer’s woad.  Dyer’s woad is a non-palatable, aggressive weed that produces chemicals which inhibit growth in adjacent plants. It has established itself across thousands of acres of western rangeland where the Bureau of Land Management estimates that it can reduce grazing by 38 percent. It is now widespread in Morgan County, as well as in 24 other counties in the state.  Dyer’s woad is a native of southeast Russia and has been used since the 17th century to produce a blue dye extract.  It is thought to have been imported into California in contaminated alfalfa seed and appeared in Brigham City around 1910.

The Morgan boys Basketball team competed in the Idaho Prep Basketball Tournament this past weekend. The tournament took place in Twin Falls, Idaho at Canyon Ridge High School and O’Leary Middle School. They beat the Rupert Spartans 44 to 27, and Filer 60 to 26 on Friday evening. On Saturday the team continued the winning streak by beating Burley 55 to 40. This secured them a spot in the championship game against the Boise Slam. Morgan entered this game as the underdogs but still came out victorious crushing the Slam 64 to 54 winning the tournament. Morgan played extremely well as a team, which was key in winning the tournament.  The coaches, Jamie Spens, Troy Butterfield, and Chad Ovard played a huge factor in the boy’s success. With the support of their family members the boys played with an extra level of intensity. The team looks forward to bringing home more victories in the future.

Ahhh, spring has finally sprung and the long awaited, or dreaded, spring cleaning can commence!  The time to do those daunting tasks that have been haunting us all winter long has now come due and we cringe knowing we can no longer spare the spurs.  Why do we dread it?  Because there’s so much to do and so little time to do it?  Probably both!  And cleaning isn’t a facet of fun no matter when it’s done.  However, once the terrorizing tasks are completed, there are renewed feelings of energy and life again…at least until the clutter begins its quest to re-claim our lives, but that’s another rut for down the road.

The Morgan ambulance service in the County has a long history helping those in need. In 1943, a fire in a business with an apartment above injured Norma Williams. She and her husband were rescued from the fire, but Morgan had no ambulance service and no medical facility so she was taken to the old post office building on the corner of Commercial Street and 125 North. She waited until the next morning for an ambulance to arrive from Ogden. She was transported to the hospital, but later died.
