When you live in a small town, soccer can be pretty competitive. The kids love to play and they love to win, which is what makes this story so touching.
Jackson Sommers was born with cerebellar atrophy, which happens when the cerebellum is smaller than normal or has atrophied from a previous state. Jackson had an MRI at 10 months old and by the time he was 2 years old, his cerebellum had atrophied to 40 percent of what a normal cerebellum should be.

One of my assigned tasks at Morgan High School is the supervision and coordination of all the activities offered by our school. A major lesson I have come to learn as the assiastant principal/athletic administrator is the effect our fans have on the school climate during competition season.  In this article I will explain some of the do’s on don’ts of watching high school athletics.  Our fans have a great influence on our school community and our student athletes, but in some cases fans have caused turmoil and strife among our teams. When negative actions occur, it takes away the fun and excitement for those who are deeply invested.

The football coaches for the Class 3A Morgan Trojans and the Class 2A South Summit Wildcats need to get together and do whatever is necessary to make sure they play each other in football on a yearly basis because in recent years, the games haven’t lacked excitement.
The Trojans followed up last year’s six-point overtime victory over the Wildcats at South Summit with a thrilling, down-to-the-wire 34-27 win in Morgan Friday night.
Morgan junior defensive back Kade Carrigan’s interception on the 10-yard line with no time left on the clock preserved the Morgan win.
“That was wild. I feel like I played in that one,” said Morgan Coach Kovi Christiansen, who appeared physically and emotionally spent after this one. “They (the Wildcats) are fantastic. I don’t know if there is another 2A team to compare with them. They are awesome.”

On January 17, 2012 the Morgan High Cheer leaders traveled to Timpview High school to participate in the Utah Cheer Coaches Association State Championship. The cheerleaders work hard all year and look forward to the competition. Morgan also won the state title in 2008 and 2011. This year Morgan beat out a tough team from Desert Hills for the title. The girls were thrilled and surprised because their coach Tammy Bullock had just talked to them about being good sports if they did not win.

Nationally, high school sports are still increasing in the number of participants that plays yearly.  It has increased every year for the past 16 years with 2010-11 being the most ever.  That trend is also prevalent at Morgan high School.  If sports are so important, one has to ask the question why?   Is it because people value the sports or is it what the sports program can teach our youth?  It seems to be the social, emotional and intellectual satisfaction that is gained by the participants.  The true purpose of high school sports is to serve the complete educational needs of all students.  The preeminent purpose is to harness discipline – desire – and commitment of all individuals involved.  Another lesson that cannot be over looked is that responsibility comes with the privilege of playing.  Morgan High School now offers 20 sports and activities sponsored by Utah High School Activities Association.  As administrators we know there are other benefits that come to students who participate that include having higher GPAs, better attendance, lower dropout rate, and fewer discipline issues.   At Morgan High School our goal is to employ people that are double goal coaches, which not only coach the sport but teach life lessons as well.  In the world of high school sports emotions can and often run high.  Our coaches are encouraged to teach, practice, and model good sportsmanship.

A man who can wear many hats (or in this case many uniforms), Zane Gray is finally hanging up one of them.  Over the last three years Zane has served as the Regional Commissioner for Morgan County American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), but in June he will be retiring.  AYSO serves approximately 550 of Morgan County’s finest youth soccer players, ranging from four to nineteen years of age.  These players can be seen each weekend in the spring and fall on the fields of the Morgan North Stake Bowery and Kent Smith Park in Mountain Green.  It is probably the largest athletic organization in the county, yet little has been said about the man who has lead these efforts with no remuneration for his work.

Dear Editor,

Last weekend the Morgan High wrestling team travelled to Delta to compete in an important two-day multi-school tournament.  Unfortunately a couple of our Morgan wrestlers ended up in the hospital due to some fairly serious injuries.  I was at work when I received a call from Coach Allen that our son, Christian, had dislocated his elbow during a match and was on his way to the local hospital.  My wife jumped in the car to make the three hour drive to Delta.
