All across the world people are affected by cancer in some way and Morgan is no different.  It seems that around every corner there is another tragic story.  For this reason, the community rallies in support of the annual Relay for Life event.  This year the event will begin August 9 at 6 p.m.

The Voted Levy – A Parent’s Perspective

Dear Editor:
The Voted Levy – A Parent’s Perspective
The proposed voted levy is a hot topic in Morgan County right now.  Community groups have formed on both sides of the issue and people are discussing it throughout the county.  Through my involvement as the Chair of the Community Council at Mountain Green Elementary School, I have spoken with many members of the community with wide-ranging opinions.  As a taxpayer and parent, I am deeply invested in seeking responsible resolutions to the school district’s financial challenges. I have attended two of the school district’s community voted levy presentations, and I have been attending school board meetings for the past two years. These meetings have helped me determine that the proposed voted levy is the most responsible, immediate solution to the district’s budget concerns.

“Every relayer has one thing- a story…” Trevor Wynn began his speech at the opening of last Friday night’s Relay for Life.  He talked about losing his grandmother and then his father.  When he researched this deadly disease, he found that the survival rate around that time was 67 percent.  He wanted to do more to help with the cause.  Shortly after his father lost his fight to cancer, he got involved with Relay for Life through Ellen Poll.  “I relay for my dad, and that’s my relay story.”

Every year residents enjoy events put on by their local cities and counties, but not many people truly have a grasp of the magnitude of work that goes into their success.  One shining example of the hard work and dedication of these volunteers is the annual Morgan 4th of July celebration.

In a close, four to three, vote Tina Kelley was re-elected as Morgan County council chair.  The discussion to select a new chair opened with Member Ned Mecham nominating Don Mathews for the position.  Member Kilmer seconded it.  Member Nelson raised concerns about Member Mathews travel schedule.  Mathews has attended meetings by phone several times over the past year as his work has required travel.  Member Mathews indicated that his schedule is changing and he would be present at all but one meeting in the next year.  Nelson also expressed concern about whether Mathews had time to serve the hours necessary to fulfill the duties of council chair.  Member Nelson nominated Council Chair Tina Kelley for a second term.  The council then voted and Kelley was re-elected to serve a second term by the narrow margin. Member Mathews was voted in as Vice Chair of the Council unanimously.

One of the first things I remember about growing up is that people would always tell me how much I looked like my dad…especially the brown eyes.  I always liked it when people said that to me.  But, until I grew up, I did not realize how much we were alike in other ways as well…at least in my mind.

It’s been a few weeks since the Morgan County Fair and the fair board has had some time to decompress and get reacquainted with their families.  With all the work that goes into delivering the fair you would think that they would take time off to rest and relax, but the fair board is already in the thick of planning for next year.
