In the five years Niel and Candice Ekberg have lived in Morgan, they have made a big impact in the community. Niel is a state trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol. Candice is a local EMT and a track and field coach at MHS. For each of them, getting to this point was a journey of self-discovery and pursuing meaningful paths. As their story unfolds, it is notable to observe their biography continues to evolve as the result of hard work—a testament that dreams may be accomplished through passion and perseverance.

Recently, two experiences have caused me to reflect on the Vietnam War.  In May, my husband and I visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.  Monday, May 28, chairs in the area in front of the wall sat empty awaiting the arrival of dignitaries for the Memorial Day service where President Obama gave his address. In addition to honoring Vietnam veterans in his speech, he set aside May 28 - Nov. 11 of this year to honor those who gave their lives to fight in this war, one of the most controversial wars of the 20th century.

On September 7, the entire seventh grade took a trip to Mormon Flats.  This year these students will have the opportunity to study about the impact that this trail had on travelers heading west to California.  Groups such as the Donner-Reed party and the Pony Express travelled up and over big mountain.  Students will also study about the Mormon trek west and the struggle the pioneers had crossing the plains and scaling big mountain.
The day was started when Linda Smith, a local historian, came and shared the stories of many people who traveled the trail the students hiked that day.  She did a wonderful job as she dressed in pioneer clothing, while sharing interesting stories.
After hearing the stories of those that traveled on the trail, students loaded the buses en route to Mormon Flats.  The seventh graders picked up the pioneer trail in Henefer and traveled along SR 66.  The students did not have to hike up the hill; they took the easier route and hiked down the trail. This five mile hike took the students around two hours to complete; students gained an appreciation for what some of those early settlers went through.  When they reached the bottom the buses were parked and waiting with the lunches.  Students sat and ate their lunches surrounded by the beautiful mountains we enjoy in our valley.  The students were also able to participate in games like leg-wrestling and stick pull.  There was also an advisory tug-of-war challenge which the students really enjoyed.
When the students returned to the school they finished the day by watching a video “A Trail of Hope.” This film relates experiences of those that traveled along the same trail the students just hiked.  It was wonderful and the students were well behaved and appreciative of having the chance to see and learn about Mormon Flats.

In September when most are getting adjusted to back to school schedules and gearing up for fall, the Morgan County Fair board will already be starting to plan next year’s fair. It is such a big undertaking that many do not even stop to think of the countless hours and service that the members of the fair board put in. Whether it be selling booths, weed whacking the grounds, figuring out garbage and disposal, making banners and signs, planning events or the many, many other things needed to get ready for the upcoming fair. For those walking around enjoying the fair, there is a tendency to take for granted all of the hard work that has been put in to create such a fun and inviting atmosphere.

Big Thanks to the Morgan County Fair Board

Every year, Morgan County is overrun by an aggressive weed called Dyer’s woad.  Dyer’s woad is a non-palatable, aggressive weed that produces chemicals which inhibit growth in adjacent plants. It has established itself across thousands of acres of western rangeland where the Bureau of Land Management estimates that it can reduce grazing by 38 percent. It is now widespread in Morgan County, as well as in 24 other counties in the state.  Dyer’s woad is a native of southeast Russia and has been used since the 17th century to produce a blue dye extract.  It is thought to have been imported into California in contaminated alfalfa seed and appeared in Brigham City around 1910.

It’s been three decades since my teenage years and I still have very vivid memories of my life growing up in the early 80s.  Of course, it was memorable when I got my driver’s license at 16.  It felt like a small step into the world of being an adult.  I was excited and “ready to roll,”  but it is difficult to “roll” when you don’t even have wheels, let alone the car and engine to go with them.
