He said the right person makes a difference, as does the kind of board you have.  For example, if board members are always fighting against each other, little gets done.

The Morgan County School District has formed a transportation committee to focus on student safety.  The committee meets every three months.  During their most recent meeting, the group discussed the installation of cross walk signs.  Morgan City and Morgan County are expected to pay for the signs, which may be installed in March.

At their latest meeting, the Morgan County School Board adopted a new budget for the 2013-14 school year and did not vote to increase the board local levy.

“I think the community spoke loud and clear they didn’t want taxes increased,” Boardmember Ken Durrant said.  “They were pretty emphatic.”

Soon after parents buy the new school clothes, pack the backpacks, and pay registration fees, they will be facing another school-related expense: new taxes.  On a split 3-2 vote, the Morgan County School Board narrowly passed a tax that will increase the property tax on a $200,000 home $14.96 a year.

Two weeks after voting to delay a property tax increase, the Morgan County School Board is reconsidering.  They have set a July 12 date to hold a public meeting, where they may vote to move forward with raising taxes as early as this November in order to build a contingency fund into the district’s budget.

A divided school board decided to leave bus times for Morgan Elementary at the current times despite a request from school administration and calls from parents.  The school district decided to change Morgan Elementary bus routes to pick up children ten minutes earlier than last year when they announced the new school breakfast program.  “This is the biggest number of complaints in a long time,” said school district superintendent Ken Adams.

In the December 14, 2010, issue of the Daily Herald in Provo, a State Senator from Utah County made some insinuating comments that have certainly created a stir.  The remarks were demeaning towards local boards of education across the state and the individuals who serve in that capacity.
