On Saturday, May 14th, Utah’s letter carriers will be doing more than delivering the mail. They will collect food on their routes to feed the hungry in their communities. May 14 is the annual letter carriers food drive across America.

Ellen Mamanakis celebrated her 87th birthday on Thursday.

She was born on May 5, 1924, in Huntington, Utah. Ellen is the first of six children of Elbert and Velma Nelson.  She was raised in Ferron, Utah  and was in the first graduating class of Emery High.

Laurel Dean Rock, of Morgan, will be celebrating his 90th Birthday this year.  He was born in Morgan, on May 6, 1921, to Laurel and Leatha Phillips Rock.

It would not be spring in Morgan without the welcoming music of the Morgan Community Choir.  The music be the choir at springtime is a harbinger of the warmth to come and this year was no exception.  Lead by director Lois Manning the choir performed numbers both traditional and contemporary.  Their opening numbers included selections from Rogers and Hammerstein as well as selections celebrating the gifts of God.

The Morgan Stars, a Special Olympics team made up of athletes from Morgan County, competed in the Northern Area Regional Track and Field games at Utah State University on Saturday, April 30.

A lively discussion was held at council meeting surrounding proposed actions to mitigate flooding.  After a meeting with County Emergency Manager, Terry Turner, and Weber Basin Water a number of individuals including county council members Kilmer and Kippen and Council Chairman Kelley met with state officials and representatives of the Army Corp. of Engineers to determine next steps.

On Saturday July 30th the Inaugural Morgan Valley Marathon will make its mark!  This exciting event will include the 26.2 Marathon, a half marathon and a 5k fun run.

Despite the weather, this spring has given us many things to celebrate at MHS.  Sterling Scholars, spring activities, and various other endeavors have involved students, parents, and other community members in worthwhile educational and extracurricular activities.  Our band, choir, and drama students have all competed and represented our school very well. They won several honors in their various competitions and have set the bar for future students and schools throughout our state.

The Morgan High School Track Team has traditionally attended the Logan High, Grizzley Classic, Invitational for the last decade.  It is a large meet with over twenty schools from 1A-5A classifications competing.

On April 7, 8, and 9 the first Morgan High Alumni Basketball Tournament was held to help raise funds for the Boys Basketball program and the Morgan Education Foundation to help with the New Century Sports Building that will begin construction this Spring.

This Saturday, April 30, will be the fourth annual Morgan High School Track and Field State Qualifying Invitational.  Fourteen teams from the Northern Utah area will be attending the meet that begins at 9:00 a.m. and will run until approximately 4:00 p.m..  The meet is again sponsored by Julie Duerden, owner of “Pocket Change”, our local dollar store in Morgan.  At a state qualifying track meet , athletes whose times or marks reach those set by the state of Utah are then qualified to participate in the State Track Championships held on May  20-21 in Provo.

The Morgan Girls Golf team traveled to Tremonton last Thursday for their final regular season tournament.  The tournament was delayed one hour while one storm passed, and once play began, it was just a matter of time before the next storm rained down on them.  Soaking wet, they managed to finish nine holes of golf.

The Utah Sons of the Pioneers hosted the Patriarch of the Europe East Area , Tom Rogers, at their luncheon last week.  Rogers has a BA in international relations from the University of  Utah,  a B.A.  in language and literature from Yale, and a PHD in Russian language and literature from Georgetown University.  He taught as assistant professor of Russian at Harvard, associate Professor of Russian at the U of U, and professor of Russian at BYU.  He also taught at BYU China.

Morgan County Library sends a big “Thanks” to a great bunch of “future authors” for sharing their talents with us.  We knew there was talent in our county but we were just amazed at the stories that were entered in our contest for National Library Week.  So we just wanted to mention a few of the awesome kids and the wonderful ideas they shared with us.

Snowbasin, Utah.— Snowbasin Resort is holding two Open Houses on May 24th and May 25th, 2011 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm with a presentation both nights at 5:30pm to allow the public the opportunity to view the proposed master plan for the 8,100 acres located in Morgan County. Tuesday, May 24th will take place in Earl’s Lodge at Snowbasin, and Wednesday, May 25th will take place at the Morgan County Council Chambers at 48 West Young Street in Morgan City. Members of the design team and Snowbasin Resort owner and manager representatives will be on hand to answer questions and explain the elements of the master plan.

Gedcom (Genealogical Data Communications) is a file format that allows genealogical data to be shared between software programs.  Gedcom was implemented many years ago by the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to facilitate genealogical information exchange.  It was subsequently adopted as a standard and virtually all genealogical software and sites support Gedcom for data exchange.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists and truckers using Interstate 84, as well as local residents in eastern Morgan County, that work will begin on a project to replace the roadway decks of the I-84 bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad at Taggart, Morgan County, beginning this week.

Emily Wilde and Chandler Weitzel presented to the Morgan City Council and requested that the city support the Morgan High School Cheerleaders by purchasing the placement of flags for the major holidays.  The city has supported this fund raiser in the past.  The council approved the donation unanimously and purchase the services from the cheerleaders for eight flags.

In a move that will provide some help for budget shortfalls at the Sheriff’s office, the Morgan City Council determined to contract with the county to have the services of an additional deputy for 84 days during the summer months.

Last Thursday, April 21, northern Utah had some major winds, and the power was out in parts of Morgan County because of it, and a lot of damage throughout six Utah Counties. In the photo above, the Eppards on Morgan Valley Drive had their barn fly into the back  of their home, and they lost a large section of a fence also. They have a wind station and it recorded at 238 miles per hour at 1:25. Then 20 minutes later, a 73 mph gust took out one of their storage sheds.  The tyrotoxism barn weighed over 12,000 pounds.

Hugh Davis was awarded the “Silver Bowl Award” on April 19, 2011 at the Lieutenant Governor’s Volunteer Recognition and Awards Banquet at the Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake City.  Each award recipient personally received their award from the Lieutenant Governor with a photo session.

Last Tuesday night, the Northeastern Regional Sterling Scholar competition came to a close.  After nearly six months of preparation, 14 schools brought their best students to compete in Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Language, Dance, Music, Social Science, Computer Technology, Business, Trade and Technical, Speech and Drama, and General.

The following is the 5th part in a series of “The History of baseball in Morgan County”. Most of the information is taken from book by Paul Stewart called “Baseball in Morgan County: The Early years”. The only exception was the April Fools day edition that was from the mind of the author.

The sun finally came out long enough for Morgan to play softball at Juan Diego on Tuesday 19th April 2011.  The Lady Trojan’s played tough defense through the third inning keeping the score 0 to 0.  When the Eagles took advantage of the Trojan’s errors, and got one run in the fourth inning, four in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning.

The Lady Trojan’s traveled to Grantsville on Friday to play the Cowboys.  Morgan held Grantsville to 0 to 3 until the fourth inning when errors over took the Lady Trojan’s and the Lady Cowboy’s soared to a 10-0 victory defeating the Lady Trojan’s.  Shay Hatch Senior hit a line drive down the third baseline getting a double for Morgan, but wasn’t able to make it home.  Whitney Titus also hit a double, but was unable to score.   The Trojan’s had some great defensive plays, but just couldn’t get there bats’ working offensively.
