For the March 2014 meeting, the Beta Literary Club invited local young adult author Jennifer A. Nielsen to talk about her writing and the different books she has published. Nielsen’s “The Ascendance Trilogy” final book “The Shadow Throne” had been released the week before. Nielsen’s agent had called her before the meeting to let her know that “The Ascendance Trilogy” was number seven on the top 10 of the New York Times Best Series list. Also the new book has reached 114 on the 150 USA Best Seller List.  Nielsen was having a great day.

On April 12, the Sons of the Utah Pioneers made a trek to the Salt Lake City Cemetery.  The tour was hosted by President Calvin and Lynette Stephens.  The life accounts of these great men and women buried in the cemetery are a tribute to our ancestry and a credit to the inhabitants of these mountain valleys.

James Covel Woody, of Mountain Green, Utah, passed away on April 18, 2014.   He was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Ogden, Utah, to Covel John and Norma Warren Woody.  He was educated in the Ogden City schools.  He was a member of the LDS Church. James was an amazing example of service.

Our sweet mom, grandma, and great-grandma, Wanda Hansen, was reunited with her lifelong sweetheart on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014.  She was born April 3, 1918 to Heber C. and Edna Rock Spackman.   Wanda lived most of her childhood years in Castle Rock, Utah.  She attended school in Coalville, where she graduated as Valedictorian in 1936.

Ten years ago Raquel Gonzalez moved to Morgan from Uruguay. Her husband Fernando had already been here for two years earning and saving money for his family to join him. After moving to Morgan and finding employment at Steph’s, Gonzalez’s passion had been ignited. Gonzalez shares, “I love cooking.” Opening her own restaurant had been a longtime dream of Gonzalez’s, one that has finally come true.

High school is a time notorious for drama and big emotions, but students from around the state took it to a whole new level as they competed in the state drama competition at Stansbury High School in Tooele on April 12.

Morgan Elementary will hold its first annual Art Festival, “Journey of Imagination, Dream, Believe, Inspire,” on April 25 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the school.

Chase Nielsen, son of Jeff and Jen Nielsen, is the speech/theater arts/forensics Sterling Scholar of Morgan High School.  He has been involved at the high school as a member of the debate and Academic Olympiad teams, and National Honor Society.  He has also served as the debate president his senior year.  He has enjoyed taking debate classes and participating in tournaments.

She is currently the student body vice president and a past junior class officer.  Laura is active in the National Honor Society, FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) and many other clubs.  She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is also a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Shaylee Ewing is the youngest of five born to Dirk and Ronda Ewing.  She has danced since the age of three and has had the opportunity of learning many different styles of dance (clogging, ballet, point, jazz and hip hop).  She loves them all!

Tyson Lindley is the son of Trevor and Tiffanie Lindley.  He is the oldest of four children, whom he is a good example for.  In his free time he enjoys playing baseball (which is more of an obsession than a hobby), swimming, competing in Future Business Leader of America competitions and travelling.

The Wildflower Pedalfest is grateful for the support it has received from Morgan County residents the last two years and this year is fortunate to be able to give back.  It will be donating $15 dollars per registration back to the Morgan County Schools.

Frank Rowe Levy was born January 20, 1933, in Los Angeles, California, to Leo Morris Levy and Emily Isabelle Waller. He returned to his heavenly home April 10, 2014.

Marion Morgan Spackman, age 94, passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Aspen Care Assisted Living in Ogden, Utah, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Robert N. Hartman of Morgan, Utah, recently celebrated his 80th birthday.  Born February 17, 1934, he grew up in Ogden, a son of Alfred and Winona Hartman. He moved to Morgan where he hunted, fished, raised cattle and enjoyed his early life.  He worked at Hill Air Force Base for 38 ½ years. He started his career as a machinist and worked his way through many positions, retiring as a scheduling supervisor.

The Morgan High School Trojans Track and Field team has suddenly become a state contender with over 100 students participating.  Many athletes are receiving great attention not only locally, but by state and nationwide colleges and universities.

A standing-room-only crowd seemingly agreed that now is not the right time to incorporate Mountain Green.  Local government representatives also revealed that Snowbasin officials do not favor incorporation.

After loading up against top 3A, 4A and 5A teams in pre-season, the Trojans varsity baseball team started region play with a 2-1 record, including a dramatic 6-5 win against last year’s region champs and baseball powerhouse Park City, on April 14.

Marriage records are an incredibly valuable resource for genealogists. Marriage records can give information about family members, dates, places, and more. FamilySearch.org has a large collection of records relating to marriage records. In this class, we will discuss the history of marriage records, learn about marriage records from different localities, and then talk about the resources of FamilySearch.org relating to marriage.

Bryan Smith is the son of Jeffery and Glenna Smith. Early on, even before his freshman year, Smith knew he wanted to be a Sterling Scholar. To fulfill this dream, he studied hard, kept his options open and made sure to communicate effectively with family, friends and teachers. Keeping his priorities straight was another big key to getting him to where he is now.

Candace Gunn, the daughter of Brian and Alisa Gunn, is the Instrumental Music Sterling Scholar for Morgan High School. She started playing the piano at about the age of 6 and began playing the oboe in band in seventh grade. As a freshman, she learned how to play the flute so that she could play in the pep band. In parades, she plays the tenor drums in the Morgan High School Drum Line.

Christian Elton is the Morgan High General Sterling Scholar. He is the son of Richard and Candice Elton. Christian loves learning, reading, sports, and girls. Christian plays football, soccer and tennis. He loves anything that has to do with learning.

Collin Gibb, son of Nathan and Suzanne Gibb, is this year’s Sterling Scholar for vocal performance. His interest in music has stemmed from living in a family where music is valued and has an ever-present influence. He began playing the piano at the age of 6. His mom taught him, but after three years of lessons, he began teaching himself. At the age of 8 he received a guitar for Christmas. Since then, he has been playing and teaching others the basics of the instrument. His guitar playing is accompanied with composition of his own songs, which he performs for friends and family at local acoustic shows.

Andrea is the daughter of John and Camille Millburn.  Growing up in a family of four brothers, she has grown to love sports and the outdoors. Her family is very important to her.  She loves spending time with them and is so thankful for all the support and love they give to her.

Lauren Casper is the daughter of Dale and Robyn Casper. As a child, she had the privilege of living in Japan with her family. Throughout her time in Japan she learned to love the Japanese people and their rich culture. This cultivated a desire within her to continue to see new places and learn new things. During her time at Morgan High School, she has made sure to take every class available that would increase her knowledge about the various civilizations and cultures throughout the world.

Rebekah Peterson is the daughter of Rich and Jenn Peterson. Peterson has loved math since she was a young child and that love of math has helped her to excel. Not one to sit back and relax, Peterson has taken on every scholastic, leadership and service opportunity that she could fit into her schedule. As soon as she found out about the Sterling Scholar program, she was immediately interested and was amazed at how her desire to be involved had helped prepare her for this opportunity.

Although the controversy over the “common core” has been going on for a couple of years, my conversations outside of fellow educators have been limited to only a few individuals.  That began to change the night of the Republican Party Caucus meetings in my precinct.  I have been amazed at the lack of understanding and misinformation possessed by several individuals that I’ve talked with; thus the impetus for this response.  The purpose of this response is not to change the minds of those who are opposed, but to simply provide those who are honestly seeking information with the other side of the story.
