 The Sterling Scholar nominees from North Summit High School and Morgan High School were recognized and honored on March 24, 2014, at the ninth annual Sterling Scholar Recognition Banquet at the Spring Chicken Inn, Morgan.  After each name was read, Holcim (US) Inc. Plant Manager David E. Fletcher presented them with a certificate, as well as a copy of the book by Sean Covey, “The Habits of Highly Effective Teens” as a token of appreciation and remembrance of this evening.

March 27, our Morgan Troyettes took flight to sunny California to compete on a national stage against the nation’s best dancers.  Nineteen of the 21 Troyettes traveled to show off their talented kicks, turns and splits at a USA competition at the Anaheim convention center.

Snowbasin Resort’s second annual Totally 80s Weekend, April 12 – 13, will include an exciting addition this year: an 80s Splash-Down Throw-Down Pond Skim. This hilarious event will be fun for spectators and participants alike. The entire weekend will be jam-packed with free 80s themed fun and entertainment for the whole family.

Earlier this week one of Morgan’s oldest homes was torn down. Built in 1869, the home was originally inhabited by the Samuel and Esther Francis family.

Hildegard Maria Voigt, age 87, passed away on Monday, March 31, surrounded by her family.  Hildegard was born in Tuebingen, Germany. on March 14, 1927, to loving parents Karl Gottlieb Eugen Juengling and Hilde Barbara (Fahrner).  Her brother Karl was two years older and they stayed close all their lives.

Rella Robertson Williams was reunited with the love of her life on March 31, 2014, after succumbing to congestive heart failure.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend at the time of her passing.  Rella was born of strong pioneer heritage on February 22, 1924, to Hyrum Boyack Robertson and Lenorah Rowe in Spanish Fork, Utah.  She lived a life centered on family, friends, church, kindness towards all, and a genuine love of life.  She loved keeping a beautiful home, hostessing, and sewing.

Nineteen-year-old Rachel Halverson of Morgan has earned many titles, has worn numerous crowns and sashes and on March 29 she earned one more title she has worked diligently to obtain.

If Morgan voters approve a sales tax increase in November, UTA could be coming to the county, but not in their traditional big buses.  In response to a November request from the Morgan County Council, the Utah Transit Authority has proposed unique transportation options for the county.

Brooklynd Preator, 21, left her hometown of Henefer on her way to work as a teller at the Morgan Goldenwest Credit Union branch.  She had been working there since August, and called a coworker to tell her she would be late to work the morning of March 28 because she had been involved in an icy accident on Interstate 84 near Taggart’s.

When Morgan High School moved from Region 11 to Region 10 beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, their local sports ticket revenues dropped almost $3,000 while tickets to region and state events more than doubled.

After a month of competitions and several weeks of studying, the Morgan Middle School Annual Spelling Bee culminated Friday, March 21 with 24 sixth to eight grade students going head to head for the title.  The first round brought words such as “automaton” and “butte,” ending with 16 boys and girls left in the competition.

Veterans of the Vietnam Era, here is your homecoming.  Saturday, March 29, 2014, has been declared as Welcome Home Vietnam Era Veterans Day. The United States was a different place back in the 60s and 70s.  The nation was tired and disgruntled about a war so far away.  It became very unpopular with the American people.

The Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers honored the annual winners of the Pioneer Essay Contest at their March 24 monthly meeting. First place went to Peter Christensen, son of Clint and Teri Christensen; second place went to Heather McMillan, daughter of Scott and Cyndi McMillan; third place went to Dillon Petty, son of William and Kelli Petty.  Each of the participants received a cash prize.

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to view the Morgan County Historical Society website, you might want to take a look.  The site now includes the video, “Welcome to Peterson.”  The video/slide show is approximately 15 minutes in length.  It gives a brief history of the early settlement, the four schools, stores and hotel that were located in the community.  Although it is not a complete history of the area, it presents some interesting facts and background information.

Our loving sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Bonnie Jean Calderwood, age 84, returned to our Heavenly Father on March 21, 2014.  She passed away peacefully with her dear cousin and special friend, June C. Wilde, by her side in the Family Tree Assisted Living Center, Morgan, Utah.

The Night Out with the Troyettes is always fun for all the dancers in Morgan County.  It celebrates the art of dance and a year of accomplishment.  Each year, the Morgan Academy of Dance members join the Troyettes and the Future Troyettes in making this an enjoyable night for the entire community.

Community lends many helpful hands

In the late afternoon of Saturday March 22, Kelly Pentz, an employee of Polaris, went into the shop behind the Polaris Dealership and Wilkinson Construction offices, where he noticed water on the floor coming from the broiler room. This unusual sight was accompanied by the smell of smoke. He quickly surveyed the boiler room where there were no apparent flames.
As Pentz went upstairs, he found the source of the smoke and began to dowse the flames with a fire extinguisher. He was then joined by TJ McMillan and Garrett Kippen, who also work for Polaris.

Judging on the number of candidates filing for a position on local and state school boards, education seems to be a hot topic in Morgan County.
Of the 30 Morgan County residents who filed for a government office last week, almost half of them were for a seat on either the Morgan County School Board or Utah State School Board District 1.
Of the 14 positions candidates filed for in Morgan County, the only races that will go to a June 24 primary election are for District 2 and 4 on the Morgan County School Board.

Six candidates will find themselves involved in the primary election for seats on the Morgan County School Board. At the same time, six other county residents who filed as candidates for one of the 14 local positions up for grabs will run unopposed in their campaigns.
Incumbent Bruce A. Galbraith will join opponents Roland Haslam and Ted W. Taylor in the primary election for the four-year District 2 Morgan School Board. Incumbent Mark A. Farmer will face opponents Anna Phelps and Alan Vesper in a primary election for the four-year District 4 Morgan School Board seat.

This last week I was part of the beta test for LDS Member access to MyHeritage, FindMyPast, and Ancestry.  I set up free accounts.  It was easy to do and the access to more experiences and records is great.  Just after I set up the accounts I received a welcome email from MyHeritage.  It was a nice email and invited me to do a few things on the site.  I went back to the site and added a little more information to my tree.  I liked the ease of adding information on MyHeritage and thought that their process of adding me as a new customer was good.  Today, however, the real fun began.

On March 5 to 7 Morgan High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter competed in the Utah State Leadership Conference against prominent young future business leaders.  Morgan students did very well and 17 students placed in the top 10 in the state in their respective events.

Last week the Morgan Lions Club hosted their always-popular annual basketball tournament.  Lions Club President DeOrr Peterson thanked everyone who helped to make this year’s basketball tournament a fun and exciting event.

Morgan City has made a stride forward in coordinating community events.  This move involved hiring a new event coordinator to work with the city council in not only making sure that big events are successful, but assisting in day-to-day operations as well.

Saturday, March 29, 2014 has been declared as Welcome Home Vietnam Era Veterans Day.  The local Posts of the VFW and American Legion would like to invite all vets and partners who served during this era to an open house from 5-6 p.m. at the Veterans Room in the Morgan County Court House.  Come and join us for refreshments and remembrance of your service.  This activity is for all who served during this “Era,” one did not have to serve in Vietnam, all who served during that time are veterans no matter whether you served at home or abroad.  Contact Milan Mecham at 801-829-3565 or Dick Slate at 801-829-6224.

The kick off for Project Linus started March 3 and will conclude May . Project Linus accepts donated new, handmade, washable blankets for military fallen soldiers as well as seriously ill and/or traumatized children, ages 0 to 18.  In previous years we were only able to accept blankets for children, but we are now expanding to teens, adults and families of fallen soldiers.

Harvey J. Porter, 102, passed away Monday March 17, 2014 at the Family Tree Assisted Living Center in Morgan Utah.

On October 14, 1929 Peggy Ann Williams was born at the family home in Morgan Utah to Daniel Oliver and Ansta Irene Williams. The baby of the family she was doted upon by Margaret, Barbara and Gamble. Her family were original settlers of the Morgan Valley and her father ran the William’s and Sons Store. Her mother taught school and was amazing with a needle and thread, making her beautiful clothing and doing needle point.

Marjorie Rollins Rose Adams slipped into eternity March 16, 2014 in Bountiful UT at the age of 90.  She was born February 19, 1924 to Zina Pearl Bybee and Oscar Whitaker Rollins as the 8th child of 12 in the ‘big house’ at the Rollins Ranch in Mtn Green, Morgan County, Utah.
