It’s been a full “first year” for Morgan Empowered, our community organization consisting of volunteers who decided a year ago to organize and work together to “…coordinate family and community resources to empower youth to become responsible and upright adults.”  Combating the plague of drug abuse in our community was the initial catalyst for drawing Morgan County leaders together representing parents, schools, law enforcement, religious organizations, and city, county, and government agencies.

The number one story for Morgan County in 2010 was Garth Day.  It seemed that the council administrator position brought controversy with him from the beginning.  First, the position of council administrator, and then the person filling the position became controversial.

The November election is story number two.  2010 will likely be a pivotal year for politics in Morgan County.  Four of the seven seats on the council were up for election.  A fifth seat changed due to the resignation of Rodney Haslam.

Those who are regular readers will know that I work for FamilySearch.  In my role there I have responsibility for Patron Services.  My team provides help for individuals around the world to find their ancestors and use FamilySearch software.

In the Morgan City council meeting on Tuesday the council passed an ordinance banning “synthetic cannabinoids.”  The substance has been given the street name of “spice”.  This follows similar bans by other cities like Ogden and Layton.  The Morgan ordinance is patterned after the Layton Ordinance.

Story Number three is Ken Adams as Superintendant.  Adams has long been a part of Morgan life.  He has contributed time energy and results to the education of Morgan’s Children.

I’ve had the opportunity to interview Morgan High School Volleyball Coach, Liz Wiscombe many times before, so as I sat down on Wednesday to interview her about the volleyball team’s recent win of the 3A state championship, it seemed like old times.

At the end of 2009 the county completed the Fairgrounds Parkway and the new bridge that was a part of the project.  2010 saw a verbal battle with the developer, Morgan Valley Partners, to receive payment for the developers portion of the project.

In June Morgan Elementary Principle Laraine Whitear died of cancer.  Speaking of Whitear, Superintendant Ken Adams said, “Laraine was one of the kindest human beings I have ever been privileged to associate with.

Story number nine is Rod Haslam.  When The Morgan County News did our first interview with Haslam we considered what title to give the article.  After talking about it and considering it we determined to title it “Big Hearted Haslam”.

Morgan County has had a lot of snow recently, and then a lot of rain. Mix in some warm days and flooding happens.

At a hearing on Monday the county indicated that the prosecution of Garth Day will likely be handed over to federal authorities.  For the past several months the FBI has been investigating the actions of Day in allegedly committing fraud and forgery at the same time as the county investigation has been proceeding.  The FBI has met with county officials, obtained documents of actions by Day, and identified areas for prosecution.

The Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers held their Christmas program combined with the swearing-in of new officers.  It all started with a spectacular meal catered to about 120 members and guests.

Captain Jonathan LaThell Mecham recently returned home to his wife, Celeste Mecham, and daughters, Cristina and Lisa, in Italy from a 12 month deployment to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in support of Operation Enduring Freedom X.

Often as I am working with genealogists they express sadness that they cannot get more members of their family to become engaged in family history.  Many of them have been doing family history for years.  Sometimes they have rooms full of information on their research and no one in their family with which they can share it.

I have written several times about FindMyPast.  Over the past few months they have continued to add to their collection.  Along with FamilySearch, FindMyPast has become the single best place to search for British ancestors.

Last Monday was the twelfth annual concert of the Morgan Community Choir.  Many families have made this a family tradition at Christmas.  It is a perfect way to start the Christmas season.

“There’s just something about Morgan…”  “It’s a great place to live and raise a family...”  “People really care about each other and care about their community in Morgan.”  
These are the repeated types of comments used by long-time residents of Morgan County, newly planted Morganites, and also by many who just pass through the quaint town when looking for the adequate adjective to describe what strong they find so appealing in this valley.

On October fifth of this year Rod Haslam resigned from the county council due to health concerns.  Haslam had been suffering for many years with a heart conditioned that worsened during his time on the council.  By the eleventh of October Haslam was hospitalized to await a heart transplant.  He was placed on medication and then began the wait for a transplant.

Two weeks ago, I discussed getting started with family history. I outlined an approach that began with starting with what you know. By writing down what you know, looking at photographs and other items and connecting with other family members substantial family information can often be complied.

Porter won the quilt from a drawing she entered to benefit the maintenance of the DUP museum and cabin located just north east of the court house.

The Morgan ambulance service in the County has a long history helping those in need. In 1943, a fire in a business with an apartment above injured Norma Williams. She and her husband were rescued from the fire, but Morgan had no ambulance service and no medical facility so she was taken to the old post office building on the corner of Commercial Street and 125 North. She waited until the next morning for an ambulance to arrive from Ogden. She was transported to the hospital, but later died.

Brody Caswell, age 12, brought to our attention, that the sign by the phone tower on the east parking lot of the Morgan County Fairgrounds, says “Morgan County Fairgroudns”
The Morgan County News learned from outgoing Morgan County Council member Karen Sunday, that she was made aware of it.  She believes that it happened about five years ago.
Sunday has advised the Fairgrounds Board and asked that they see that the sign is replaced with the correct spelling.

It is just after Thanksgiving and many of us are sitting at home in the after turkey stupor. If you are like me you are taking shelter indoors from the cold and enjoying time with the family. I love the holidays and the traditions handed down through the years from family. It is a great time of year to do family history.

Misses Lula Barton and Afton Shand were weekend visitors in Salt Lake as guests of Miss Shand’s sister, Beth, at the Beehive House.
