Youth Running Club in Morgan

Article Date:
4 March, 2011 - 06:00

Local mom and fitness enthusiast, Karen Nelson will be starting a running club for kids of all ages.  While helping with the initial planning of Morgan’s first Annual Marathon, Karen was inspired to fulfill her dream of working with kids in the fitness arena.  She has always wanted to do some kind of running type activity that involved children and a running club seems to be the perfect fit.
Our goal is to provide a welcoming atmosphere for kids of any athletic ability to meet together and discover the joy that can be found in the sport of running. Our focus will be to help each individual discover the physical abilities and talents that they have and to improve their physical fitness.
The club will meet once a week beginning Thursday March 31st and continue until it’s too cold to meet anymore.
Kids will be encouraged to keep mileage logs and training diaries.  Prizes will be awarded for running a cumulative total of 10 miles, 26.2 miles, 50 miles and 100 miles during the year.
Kids will be encouraged to train for and enter into community organized races such as the Gerald Anderson Memorial 5K and Morgan Valley Marathon.
Classes will be broken down into age appropriate segments focusing on form, pacing and improving athletic ability.  Fun drills and games will be incorporated to actively teach proper funning form, pace control, strength and endurance.  We will begin and end each class with proper warm up and cool down.
