All across the world people are affected by cancer in some way and Morgan is no different. It seems that around every corner there is another tragic story. For this reason, the community rallies in support of the annual Relay for Life event. This year the event will begin August 9 at 6 p.m.
Relay for Life is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to help raise funds for cancer research. The Relay for Life committee is made up entirely of volunteers who work around the clock to make sure each year is a success. Tara Hammer, chair of the event, always goes above and beyond and is surrounded by her supportive family.
Committee members are asked every year, “What is this event all about?” The answer goes far beyond monetary goals to fund cancer research. This event is about healing, celebrating life and raising awareness. It is about coming together as a community to support those fighting this incredible battle and lifting the spirits of those who have lost loved ones.
Countless hours are spent all year long in preparation for this event. What many people don’t know is that you don’t have to be on a team to participate that evening. The Relay committee would love to see more of the community come out to support the on-site fundraisers that take place that evening. There is a silent auction that always has quality items to bid on, meals and snacks throughout the evening, kids’ games, a cake walk, potted flowers and other various items for sale at team booths.
In addition to the fundraising efforts, free entertainment is offered all night and into the morning. Fun traditions like Mr. Relay and name that tune are always favorites. There are also live bands, Zumba and karaoke. With an entertainment chair like Amanda Campbell, everyone is sure to have a good time. So please join the fun and come out to support a great cause.
