The number 1 ranked Morgan Lady Trojans played the returning State 3A champions from Richfield  High School on Friday, December 17 at the Sevier Center during the 2A-3A preseason preview, and hammered the home team by a score of 50-27.
The Lady Trojans played well, especially during the first half.  An Ashley “Spud” Garfield jumper from close range, followed by a Becca Rees jumper from distance got the Trojans off to a strong start.  Rachael Johnson hit a fast break lay up to put the Trojans up 12-3. Near the end of the quarter, Becca stole the ball on defense and dribbled down court where she found Kelsey Henry for a 15 foot jumper from the right elbow to put Morgan up 17-9 at the end of the quarter.
The Trojan defense came alive in the 2nd quarter, holding the Wildcats to only 6 points. Offensively it was a steady diet of Spud, as she scored 9 in the quarter off of a variety of jumpers, free throws, and offensive rebound put-backs.
Morgan out scored the Wildcats 13-8 in the 3rd, when play turned a little sloppy. Senior point guard Rees went down hard to the floor in a scramble for a loose ball, and gingerly limped off the court. She sat out the remainder of the game. Senior shooting guard Shaylee Pentz also incurred  a leg injury during the game.
Sloppy play continued into the 4th, with fouls and turnovers limiting the flow of the game. Freshman Rashel Blazzard would play the point in place of Becca, and at the 6 minute mark she would corral a rebound and go coast to coast for the lay in to put Morgan up 44-25. The next time down the court Blazzard would find “Truck” Stegelmeier with a pass to the baseline, where she would hit a high arcing jumper. Blazzard would later hit a long two pointer from the left baseline to put Morgan up 50-27. Junior Kenzy Davis would end the scoring by  hitting a running shot to end the game and give the Trojans the victory. The Trojans held Richfield to only 4 4th quarter points and a 52-27 victory.
Ashley Garfield scored 20 points for the Trojans, added 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Rachael Johnson added 10 points and 8 rebounds, Rashel Blazzard added 7 points 3 assists and 3 steals, Chelsey Stegelmeier pumped in 6 points to go with 3 boards and 2 steals. Becca Rees added 5 points and 6 assists and 3 steals prior to her injury.
