The Morgan girls soccer team played their 3rd region game of the year at Judge Memorial on Thursday Sept. 15. The Trojans played hard, but came out on the short end of the 6-0 score. A good team will take advantage of their opponents mistakes, and Judge made the Trojans pay for a few lackadaisical passes and some poor marking, scoring 3 first half goals to lead 3-0 at half time. Morgan battled hard, trying to maintain possession of the ball to mount an attack after half time, but Judge scored 3 more goals to put the game out of reach.
Before losing to Judge, the Morgan Girls soccer team took on the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles in girls soccer on Thursday Sept 9 on Morgans home field. This was a rematch of the 3A state championship game from last year, which Juan Diego won 1-0 in a hard-fought battle. Unfortunately, this match ended the same for our Lady Trojans, who lost by a score of 8-2. A big advantage for the Juan Diego squad was that they returned many of their starters, including the 3A MVP in the mid-field and a first team all-state striker, while our Morgan squad lost 9 seniors from last year, and field a very young team.
Juan Diego, with their team speed and ability to accurately pass the ball, put constant pressure on the young Morgan defenders, who worked hard in the first half to stay with the speedy Juan Diego attackers. Senior keeper Chelsey Stegelmeier hung tough and made some quality saves to keep Morgan in the game, but the Trojans found themselves down 3-0 at the half.
The Soaring Eagles came out firing in the second half, scoring several quick goals to put the game out of reach. However, the Trojans would not give up, and after tinkering with the line up in the last third of the game, they were able to score two quick goals on the opponents. Out of her new sweeper position, Senior AJ Bateman won the ball in the back, and with one quick move passed the ball up the field. The ball was returned to her as she sprinted the length of the field, dribbling past the defense and hitting a shot to the left of the keeper to stun the Soaring Eagles. Not 5 minutes later, and Senior Becca Rees did virtually the same thing from her Mid-field position, bobbing and weaving through the suddenly helpless defense to hit a powerful shot passed the keeper and into the back of the net. This goes to show that this team will never give up, and that the 5 seniors on the squad will help pull this young team up for the rest of the season.
The J.V. team pulled out a great victory winning by a score of 2-1. Sophomore Tasha Andersen and Junior Cisalee Oldham scored for the Trojans.
