Article Date:
18 May, 2012 (All day)

Another beautiful weather day greeted the track athletes as they unloaded the buses at Stansbury High School to compete for the Region XI Track and Field Championship.  The two day meet is always exciting as it brings to a close the months of hard work and training that the athletes have extended to be ready to battle for the region trophy.  The first day of running events are all trials except for the 1600m.  The top 8 times in each event are brought back on the second day for a one heat final.  Field events are competed on both days with finals taking place on each day in each event.  Athletes work very hard to qualify the first day for the finals on the second day.   The top four places in each event qualify for the state meet including relays.

There were some young athletes that made a difference for the Morgan Girls’ Teams.  Freshman Britten Duerden won the high jump and took fifth in the 100 hurdles.  Freshman Peyton Lish finished sixth in the 800m and ran a leg in the second place 4x400 relay. Sophomore Chandler Weitzeil placed second in the 100m and fourth in the 200m and anchored the 4x100 relay to a third place.  Sophomore Breann Hurlbut finished third in the 200m, fourth in the 400m, ran in the 4x100 relay and anchored the 4x400 relay to second place.  Sophomores Andrea Millburn and Candace Gunn , running in the 1600m and 3200m, captured sixth and eighth in both events.  Junior Kayla Jackson ran personal records in both the 100 and 300 hurdles and placed second and third respectively.  Junior Kassie Nagel won the shot and took fourth in the discus.  The girls’ team will be strong again next season.

For the boys, freshman Andrew Allen ran a personal record in the 800m for fifth and ran the 800m in the medley only to be nosed out at the finish by 4 inches for fifth place. Sophomore thrower Kyle Stapley earned a fourth in the shot and seventh in the discus.
