Obituary - Gertrude K. McEwen

Gertrude Evelyn Koemel McEwen, age 86, passed away March 12, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Syracuse, surrounded by all her children.  She was born January 18, 1926 in Robstown, Texas to Walter Adolph Koemel and Clara Wilhelmina Magdalena Steger Koemel.  She married Earl James McEwen, December 2, 1944.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  She and Earl moved with their growing family from Texas to several places in Utah and Idaho settling in Ogden, Utah until moving to Mt. Green, Utah for retirement.  

Gertrude graduated from Weber State College in 1965 with a degree in Elementary Education.  She taught more than 600 children to read in her 22 years at Kaysville Elementary.  Gertrude was an active member of the LDS church serving in many capacities and fulfilling a mission with Earl to the Family History Library in Salt Lake from 1992-1995.  She dearly loved family history work and submitted hundreds of names for temple work.  She set an example by continuing her education throughout her life.  She began her adult education at Kingsville, Texas A & I University and attended six colleges to get her degree and continued taking courses throughout her teaching career.  She enjoyed traveling internationally with Earl.  

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; her sister Ruth Maureen; and, her brother Walter Adolph, Jr.  She is survived by her sister, Patricia Ann Koemel Anderson, Lubbock, Texas; her brother Walton Charles (Betty) Koemel, Lamesa, Texas and her children, Jim (Gena) McEwen, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Marilyn (George) Knighton, West Bountiful, Utah; Kathy (Jim) Bishop, Syracuse, Utah; Ron McEwen, Syracuse, Utah; Karen (Reed) Munson, Escalante, Utah; and, 26 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren.  The family would like to express appreciation to Advocate Hospice and Rocky Mountain Healthcare and all of her personal caregivers.

A viewing will be held Thursday evening, March 15th, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Lakes Ward Chapel, 3065 S. Bluff Rd., Syracuse, Utah.  Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16th at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Green Highlands Chapel, 5378 W. Old Highway Rd., Mt. Green, Utah with a viewing starting at 9:30 a.m.  Interment will be in the Mt. Green Cemetery under the direction of Larkin Mortuary.
