MorganMTB begins their season in great shape

Article Date:
20 September, 2013 (All day)

The MorganMTB Race Team opened their season with an impressive showing last Saturday. Twenty-four students from Morgan High joined over 600 other students from around the state in the first race of the Utah High School Cycling League 2013 race series.
The full day event took place on the Corner Canyon trails in Draper.  Depending on their category, student racers completed two or three laps of an almost six-mile course that including roughly 750 vertical feet of climbing per lap.
Morgan’s sophomore girls were the highlight of the day, taking three of the top five places in their race against 18 other girls.  Hannah Clark earned her team their first “Leaders Jersey” with an impressive win, finishing 30 seconds ahead of second place.  Kate Madorin was not far behind taking the third place position.  Wrapping things up was Megan McMillian with a fifth place finish.  Megan gave her all when it was most important by holding off a competitor by only 4 seconds to finish up the race.
The day did not come without some difficulties for a few of the racers.  Junior varsity racers Amber Harvey wrecked on her second lap of the course that resulted in her not being able to use her rear brake for the rest of the race.  Sophomore racer Leif Lofgren and varsity racer Brayden Nielsen also experienced wrecks while on their course, Brayden’s while on his first of three laps.  While their various troubles did affect their overall performance, it wasn’t enough to stop their determination as they, and every other member of the team, were able to finish his or her race.
At the end of the day, Morgan picked up a well earned fourth place in the team completion placing only 22 points behind the third place team.  Morgan’s success Saturday hinged on the hard work, training and dedication of every team member has committed to since they began practice in mid-June.  Their team is now looking forward to their next race on Sept. 28 in Park City.
