Morgan Son’s of the Utah Pioneers

Article Date:
24 February, 2012 (All day)

Monday, February 20th the Sons of the Utah Pioneers had the very enjoyable opportunity to be addressed by Robert Woodford during their monthly meeting at Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn.  Calvin Stephens invited him to be our guest speaker which he graciously accepted.  He discussed the ongoing efforts of publishing the Joseph Smith Papers both in book form and on line.  He reported that there are many misconceptions based on incorrect readings of these documents.

Robert Woodford is an expert on Joseph Smith and the Doctrine and Covenants. He was a teacher in seminaries and institutes with the Church Educational System for many years. He is one of the editors with the Joseph Smith Papers Project and along with Steven C. Harper and Robin S. Jensen.

Woodford spent much of his career as an institute instructor at the Institute of Religion adjacent to the University of Utah campus. Woodford has a Ph.D. from Brigham Young University in Bible and modern scripture. His 1974 dissertation was entitled The Historical Development of the Doctrine and Covenants and has been considered the definitive and most exhaustive analysis of the textual development of the Doctrine and Covenants.

We meet together the third Monday of each month and are very much enlightened by such speakers.  Those of you who may be interested to come and attend with us are invited to contact Paul Dickson or any other member.
