Morgan DUP encourages youth to participate in pageant

Article Date:
28 March, 2014 (All day)

The Morgan Company of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers are volunteering to pay the $30 entrance fee for any local young women interested in participating in The Days of ’47 Royalty Pageant held April 10 to 12.
This year’s theme is“Pioneers - Pushing Toward Our Future.”  Contestants, descendants of pioneers who arrived in the valley between 1847 and 1869, are pathfinders of today. They represent the high standards of modern-day pioneers with a love of their pioneer heritage and a vision of the difference young women can make in the world.
The pageant is produced by the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers (ISDUP). All young women who will be competing are between the ages of 19 and 25. The chosen royalty will ride in The Days of ’47 Parade, attend many functions (such as The Days of ‘47 Rodeo), and speak at numerous gatherings and events during the summer of 2014. They will be role models to all young women who hear their message as they represent the State of Utah, The Days of ’47, and Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP).
The pageant is open to all women who have pioneer ancestry and are qualified in other required areas, regardless of religious or ethnic background.  The contestants are judged on moral character, community service, education and goals; along with stage presence, communication skills and personal appearance.
Scholarship funds for higher education will be given to the queen and two attendants.  There will also be a scholarship awarded to the “Annie Taylor Hyde Award” recipient.  The winner of this award is chosen by her peers as the most congenial, kind, compatible and friendly.
Morgan Company will pay the $30 entrance fee for any young women wishing to compete for this prestigious position.  Please contact ShaRon Nelson at (801) 589-8345 if you are interested in applying and she will provide you with the necessary forms, or you can go online at  As a former fair queen director, ShaRon can also help guide you in the competition.  There is no reason why one of our local young women can’t win.  They are just as capable as any other young woman in the state!! If not this year, think about participating next year!  The application deadline is April 1, 2014.
The qualifications are as follows: Young women between the ages of 19 and 25 years (must be age 19 by date of the pageant); pass background check; be a descendant of a Utah pioneer who came into or was born in the state of Deseret/Utah Territory between July 24, 1847, and May 10, 1869; abstain from drugs, tobacco and alcohol; unmarried and not previously married or given birth; must be available during April, May, June, July and August 2014 to prepare for and perform the necessary functions and appearances for The Days of ’47; be able to reign from April 2014 to April 2015.
The day of the pageant is exciting. Please encourage your daughter or grand-daughter to apply.
In other news, Morgan Company DUP is hosting the DUP Tri-County convention this year on Saturday, April 26, with Morgan, Wasatch and Summit County Companies attending.  The officers meeting will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the DUP Museum followed, at 10 a.m., by the general meeting and luncheon at Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn.
Convention special guests will be the newly chosen 2014 Days of ’47 Royalty, Garth Palmer, and International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers (ISDUP) leaders Claire Olsen and Dawna Thayne.  We will also be favored with a musical number by Ramona Pace, an ISDUP 2013 song contest winner.
ShaRon Nelson, Morgan Company president, will welcome and conduct the meeting.  Local members of DUP are invited to attend.
