This past September, the Utah State Horse 4-H program held their annual Individual State Finals horse show at the Equestrian Park in South Jordan. Approximately 250 4-H members traveled from all over the state to compete for top prizes and awards.  The show was held over a two day period with the written test and judged events being completed on Friday, September 17 and all the timed events being held on Saturday September 18.

Each county in the state is allowed to send the top five qualifying members from three different age divisions to compete during the two day show.   Those qualifying to participate from Morgan included Junior members:  Reganne Hales, Madisen Porter, Fallon Carroll, Morgan Balding and Makayla Amlin. Intermediates: Hanna Giles, McKenna Hales, Kacee Waldron, Darby Mortenson, and Hannah Horrocks. Seniors: Kami Call, Dani Hammer, Danielle Robison, Alexis Sommers, and Havala Rich.  These individuals worked throughout the 2010 summer preparing for and competing at the three horse shows sponsored by the Morgan Horse 4-H program earning points to qualify for State.

After a fun and warm two day event the final placings were posted.  In the Junior age division 85 members competed for placing in each class.  Reganne Hales was our top finisher with an overall placing of 8th including placing 4th in Showmanship, 13th in the judged events, 4th in the Keyhole, and 10th in the speed events.  Madisen Porter also had a top ten placing with a 7th place in Western Riding.

Out of the 95 members competing in the Intermediate division, McKenna Hales placed 17th overall, also placing 16th in the judged events.  Remarkably Hanna Giles and Kacee Waldron both earned placings despite being forced to use replacement horses as their project horses were both injured during the course of the summer. Hanna Giles finished with 7th place in Western Riding and 11th place in the judged events.  Kacee Waldron earned a 4th place in Showmanship.

The Senior age division had 70 members competing for placings.  Coming out with a 1st place finish in Western Riding was Dani Hammer, also finishing 7th in the judged events.

Qualifying for state is quite an honor for these youth and their project horses, and having a top 10 finish at State Finals is no small accomplishment.  We are proud of the hard work and dedication they have exhibited, and are looking forward to watching the Horse 4-H program as it gets underway this season.  The Spring Show is scheduled to be held on Saturday June 11 beginning at 8:00 am.  Come watch our local youth display the skills they are working on at practice each week!
