Morgan ‘Pocket Change’ Invitational

Article Date:
11 May, 2012 (All day)

A clear, calm, warm morning welcomed over 500 athletes to the Morgan High School track April 21, 2012, for the fifth annual Morgan “Pocket Change” Invitational.  The athletes represented fifteen schools from Utah and Wyoming in classification from 1A to 5A.  Competition began at 9:00 am and ran until 3:30 pm.  The stands were filled with spectators, athletes and parents.  Team tents were scattered around the grass outside the track fence providing shade for the day-long event.

Julie Duerden, owner of “Pocket Change”, the dollar store in Morgan, has been the sponsor since the invitationals inception.  A great track athlete herself at BYU, Julie has not lost her knowledge or enthusiasm for the sport and thrills in helping young athletes gain the same passion for the varied events in track and field.  She comes to the track a few days a week to help with the high jump and long jump.  The track team would like to thank Julie for all of her efforts in supporting Morgan High Track.

The team would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped run the field events.  Two great Morgan track team members from the 1990’s returned to help with the duties of starter and clerk of the course.  Brothers, Kody and Kansas Whitear helped keep the meet running smoothly as they got all the running events in place and out of the blocks without a hitch.  It was good to have them on the new track, which they never had the opportunity to enjoy during their track years at Morgan.

The 2012 edition of the Morgan Girls Team is having a very good year and has won every region meet competed so far.  They almost pulled off a back-to-back win at their own invitational narrowly losing by 2 points to the Weber Warriors 123-121.  The girls have good depth and are able to score points in almost every event at a meet.  Junior Kassie Nagel is rated 2nd in the state in her shot and discus and freshman high jumper Britten Duerden has one of the best jumps in the state at 5-06.  Senior Kelsey Henry is scoring points in the shot, discus and javelin consistently at each meet.  Congratulations Lady Trojans.
