MMS counselor passes CCGP Performance Review

Article Date:
13 April, 2012 (All day)

On Tuesday, March 27, 2012 MMS Counselor Gary Crittenden hosted a review panel from the State Office of Education and the CTE Team from Box Elder School District. They were here to evaluate how effectively the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program is used in our school. This review consisted of Mr. Crittenden explaining and providing evidence in twelve different standards divided into two sections as to what the MS counseling program provides for the students.

Mr. Crittenden provides opportunities for our students to talk about things that are important to them, whether it be academic or personal in nature. Students feel safe and secure as they share their hopes as well as their concerns with Mr. Crittenden and as he helps them develop and enhance their academic or social skills. He also helps them apply these things to the real world. Students know that Mr. Crittenden or Critty as many call him is their advocate no matter what the situation.

Mr. Crittenden has attended many trainings and conferences in order to be up-to-date on the current counseling practices in education. Of all the things that Mr. Crittenden does for our students, the most important in my opinion, are the direct services he makes available to all students. Recently, Mr. Crittenden spent almost an entire week after school meeting with parents and students of the 8th grade for their annual SEOP and high school registration. It was amazing to see him customize the information that was needed for each student. He accomplished this knowing the students personally and using examples that they could relate to in their own lives.

Another area that Mr. Crittenden provides services is in Career Exploration and Development. As a facilitator he can help students identify the things they enjoy that may transfer to future employment and college readiness. One of the ways he does this is by helping them understand the results of their individual student strengths survey. After they go over these results, every student leaves Mr. Crittenden’s office knowing they have at least one strength area to build on in their lives.

We are lucky to have Mr. Crittenden as our counselor and we appreciate the individual interest he has in each of our students. I congratulate him on passing the CCGP performance review.
