The  number 1 ranked in 3A Morgan girls basketball squad took on 5A Pleasant Grove in the annual endowment game on Tuesday, December  14 at Trojan gym.
The Lady Vikings are a highly regarded squad that plays in Utah County in Region 4. The Lady Trojans were not the most hospitable guests, trouncing the Lady Vikings by a score of 73-43.
In the first quarter, you couldn’t stop senior forward Rachael Johnson, you could only hope to contain her, as she scored the first 12 Morgan points to push the Trojans out to an early 12-10 lead.  Many of her points were off of the offensive boards, and some sweet passes from her teammates. Senior Ashley”Spud” Garfield would add an offensive put-back bucket, and Johnson would add a free throw to give Morgan a slim 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, a banked-in 3 pointer from the top of the key seemed to ignite Garfield and her teammates. Junior center Kelsey Henry hit consecutive hard drives to the basket to put the Trojans up 31-22. Senior point guard Becca Rees would nail a 3 from the left side of the arc, then play stifling defense on the next possession on the Vikings point guard to cause a turnover. Spud Garfield would collect another offensive board off a missed Trojan 3 pointer, get the put- back bucket and push the Trojans out to a 38-25 lead at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, the Lady Trojans would widen their lead with aggressive defense and offensive rebounding, and some great play by Spud, who would score the first 10 points of the quarter for Morgan. The lead at the end of the 3rd quarter was 20 points, with the score being 60-40.
Senior center Chelsey Stegelmeier would add some nice inside buckets early in the 4th, one off a tough offensive rebound.  Senior sharp shooter Shaylee Pentz hit a long two point bucket, and when Rees canned her 3rd long 3 pointer from the right side of the arc, the Trojans were up by a winning score of 73-43.
Spud had another monster game with 27 points (10-12 from the line), 11 rebounds (6 offensive), 6 assists, and 6 steals. Rachael Johnson added 13 points and 6 boards (5 offensive) and 3 assists. Kelsey Henry canned 13 points in her 14 minutes on the court, hitting  a perfect 7 of  7 from the line with some sweet high-arcing free throws, Becca Rees scored 10 points with 4 assists and 4 steals, while Chelsey Stegelmeier scored  8 points along with 8 boards.
Team statistics saw the Lady Trojans hitting 25-62 (40.3%) from the field, and 20-24 from the free-throw line. Morgan collected 39 rebounds with 19 offensive boards compared to 23 and 6 for the Vikings. The Trojans swiped 16 steals,  and  had 38 points in the paint, compared to 16 for the Vikings.
The Lady Trojans will now play in the 3A Preview tournament over the weekend, taking on host Richfield Friday night at 8:30, and Delta on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The following week will see them travel to Heber City to play the Wasatch Wasps on Tuesday,  December 21 before the Christmas break.
