The Lady Trojans basketball team played a Region 11 game at Juan Diego on Tuesday Jan. 18th.  Last year, on their last trip to Draper to play the Soaring Eagles, the Morgan squad saw their 19 game winning streak come to a screeching halt, as Juan Diego won 54-51. This year would be different, as the Trojans pretty much  had it their way,  and won by a score of 84-28.

The first quarter saw Junior Center Kelsey Henry and Senior forward Ashley (Spud) Garfield do all of the offensive damage for the Trojans, scoring all 13 points in the quarter as the Trojans jumped out to an early 13-7 lead.

A 3 pointer from the right side by Senior guard Shaelee Pentz put the Trojans up by 9 with 2 minutes gone in the  2nd quarter. The Trojan defense  then came up big with back to back blocked shots, one by Senior forward Chelsey Stegelmeier, who looked to be clearly beaten on a drive to the basket by a Juan Diego player,  but recovered and came out of no where for the swat, and the other by Garfield on the next Juan Diego possession down the court at the 4:25 mark of the quarter.   In addition to being a major pest on defense from her point guard position, Senior Becca Rees would score 5 quick points on a 3 pointer from the left side, and a two point lay up off an assist from Senior Rachael Johnson. The Trojans lead stood at 29-14 at half time.

Coach Matthews half time speech must have been legendary, because the Lady Trojans came out on firing on all cylinders,  scoring 31 points in the 8 minute 3rd quarter. Rees started it off with a dandy left handed  runner for 2 points, and then hit a long 3 off an out of bounds play from the right baseline on the next possession. Rachael Johnson then swiped one of her 6 steals and went coast to coast for the lay up. Johnson then made a sweet pass to Pentz under the basket for a lay up, and Morgan had put a  quick 9-0 run on the board, forcing a Juan Diego time out. Nothing the home team did could slow down the Trojans. The quarter ended with Freshman Rashel Blazzard knocking down a shot at the buzzer for a 60-26 Trojan lead.

The Trojans subbed liberally in the 4th, and the second and third units played just as well as the starters, holding Juan Diego to only 2 forth quarter points, while scoring 24 of their own. The last couple of minutes had Blazzard making a conventional 3 point play, Sophomore Keirsha Dickson hitting a bucket, Blazzard going 2-2 from the free throw line, and Freshman McKenzie Schenk knocking down two quick buckets to end the game.

Stats would show Morgan hitting 58 percent from the field (4-5 on 3 pointers), making 20-25 free throws, hauling in 27 rebounds, passing off for 22 assists, with 50 points in the paint.

Spud Garfield led 4 players in double figures with 24 points, 8 boards and 6 assists. Kelsey Henry scored 14 points with 4 boards, Becca Rees scored 13 point on 3-3 3 pointers with 5 steals, and Rashel Blazzard  went 4-4 from the field and 4-5 on free throws for 12 points and 4 assists. Shaelee Pentz contributed 8 points, and Rachael Johnson scored 7 points, with 6 steals and 5 rebounds.
