On May 4, 2013, a 4-H/FFA workshop was held for anyone who has a livestock project this year. The day began with instruction on livestock judging presented by Dane Ercanbrack.
The participants learned how to judge a class of lambs, hogs and steers for confirmation and soundness. Then Ercanbrack placed each class and gave reasons for the placement. Janiel Blazzard and Chase Petersen placed each class correctly.
Youth were then divided into their species groups and were taught showmanship skills and show preparation of their animal. The showmanship portion was hands on with each exhibitor practicing their showing technique.
After a lunch provided by the Jr. Livestock Committee and cooked by the FFA, the group was split again by species to rotate through three classes. They were instructed by Dr. Jason Lott, who spoke on animal nutrition and healthcare. Ask a participant of the workshop to tell you how to keep the “bugs” in their animal’s stomachs happy.
Karen Eddington taught the importance of keeping accurate records from the start of the project and went over each page of the project packet. She helped all to understand that keeping records help us know if we are making or losing money raising livestock.
Finally, all listened to a presentation on cuts of meat by Bingham Custom Meats. They made it fun using handouts the participants colored with markers to learn where different cuts of meat are located on their animal.
The workshop concluded with a drawing for a gift basket for each species for those who attended the entire workshop. The gifts included a feed bucket donated by Ag Services, a package of jerky and a gift certificate for a shirt from Bingham Custom Meats, and a gift certificate to Subway and IFA from the Jr. Livestock Committee.
The workshop was very well organized and helpful to all ages of participants. Junior Livestock participants appreciate the presenters and anyone who donated their time and efforts to teach and serve our clubs. Those who attended said it was well worth their time.
