How do you spell DOMINATION?  During the Harry Burchell Classic basketball tournament last week, it was spelled “Morgan High Lady Trojans Basketball,” as the girls played and beat 5A Fremont High 60-44, and then tourney host 4A Bonneville High 63-21 for the tourney championship.  This is the second year in a row that the Trojans have won this tournament.
On Morgan’s first possession in the first game vs. Fremont, Ashley Garfield hit a three pointer from the right side of the arc, was fouled on the play, hit the ensuing free throw, and just like that, Morgan was up 4-0.  Point guard Becca Rees canned a long three on the next possession.  After a short jumper in the lane by Garfield, Morgan was up 9-2.  Tough defense by Rachael Johnson and Shaelee Penz forced the Silverwolves into several bad passes, and the Trojans were up 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second, with the Trojans inbound plays working to perfection to get open shots.  Reese would hit a long three from the right corner, and Garfield would get lose in the middle for a jumper to put Morgan up 30-15.  Morgan would lead 36-21 at half time.
Morgan would put on a fierce full court press, forcing Fremont into three consecutive turnovers in the third quarter.  Shaelee Pentz would assist on a basket to Freshman Rashel Blazzard to end the quarter with Morgan up 48-31.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Blazzard would take the ball under the basket to the left side and hit a tough over the shoulder layup.  Johnson would later hit a nice layup off an out of bounds play late in the fourth and the Trojans would finish with a 60-44 victory.
The Championship game on Saturday would find the Trojans up against the host Bonneville Lakers.  Morgan started out strong with crisp passing and strong defense.  The Lakers offense could not get any easy looks at the basket, and were held to two points in the first quarter.  Freshman Rashel Blazzard hit a three from the top of the key in the last minute of the quarter to push Morgan out to a 14-2 lead.  Morgan poured it on in the second quarter, led by two three pointers by Becca Rees and one by Rachael Johnson.  Morgan’s lead jumped to 35-9 at half time.
The second half saw Morgan outscore the Lakers 28-12, and the Trojans won going away with a score of 63-21.  The Trojan bench played great, lead by Rashel Blazzard with nine points, five assists and two steals, Freshman Mckenzie Schenk added six points and four boards, Freshman Shaylee Duncan also scored six points with four boards, and Senior Chelsey Stegelmeier scored two points with four boards, a steal and a blocked shot.
Morgan shot 45 percent from the field (24-53) and held Bonneville to 16 percent shooting (6-38).  Morgan hit 4-8 from the three point line, while Bonneville was 0-10.  Morgan won the rebounding battle 40-18 and scored 25 bench points.
Ashley (Spud) Garfield was named MVP of the Tournament, and Rachael Johnson and Becca Rees made the all-tournament team.
