Jessie L. Permar has completed the requirements for a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s, School of Social Policy and Practice. Graduation ceremonies will be held at UPenn’s, Philadelphia Campus, May 2012.
Daughter of Thomas and Carol Permar of Morgan, Jessie graduated from Morgan High School in 2003 and Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA, in 2006 with a B.A. in Anthropology. She served two consecutive tours as a volunteer with AmeriCorp’s, National Civilian Community Corps, a federally sponsored service organization whose mandate is to engage America’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment, both on the national and community levels. After AmeriCorp training at Perry Point, MD, Jessie served in a variety of assignments; upgrading low-income, homes in Ft. Pierce, FL; rehabbing Hurricane Katrina houses in Port St. Louis, MS and St. Bernard Parish, New Orleans, LA; and tutoring disadvantaged young people in Brooklyn, NY. At the end of her AmeriCorp service, Jessie returned to New Orleans to serve as a coordinator for the local school systems, “Each One, Save One” program that provides mentors for underprivileged students. In 2010, she was accepted in University of Pennsylvania’s, Graduate School.
Following graduation, Jessie will join the nonprofit, “Rebuilding Together”, as a program manager in Washington, DC.
