Have you ever considered how you could make a difference in Morgan County? Now is your chance. This year there will be elections for three council seats and three school board seats in the county. While the presidential election may be catching all of the headlines, the local positions in Morgan County have, perhaps, a greater effect on life in the county than any of the national seats. The following positions are up for election on the county council:
1. District 3 – Incumbent - Howard Hansen
2. District 4 – Incumbent - Ronda Kippen
3. At Large A – Incumbent – Robert Kilmer
Members Hansen and Kippen have indicated that they do not plan to run for re-election. Member Kilmer has indicated that he will run for the District 3 seat being vacated by Member Hansen. All the positions are four year terms. The At Large position is voted upon by the entire county. The district positions are voted upon by those living in the district boundaries.
The district three and four seats have a filing cost of $30.00 and require 30 signatures to qualify. The At Large A seat filing cost is $30.00 and requires 100 signatures to qualify.
The three school board positions up for election this year are:
1. District 1 – Incumbent Jodi Hipwell
2. District 3 – Incumbent Ken Durrant
3. District 5 – Incumbent Neil Carrigan
The cost to file for these positions is $25.00. There is no signature requirement. Filing packets can be obtained from Teresa Lake in the county offices. Filing begins today, Friday March 9 and will continue until Thursday March 15 at 5:00. County offices are normally closed on Friday, but Teresa will be available today at the office for candidates to file and to answer any questions about the positions and the process.
These local positions need good candidates who are interested in helping to build a better community in Morgan and provide the best schools for our children. Serving in one of these positions is a great way to learn first hand about how local government works. It is also a great way to get to know others in the community, learn about community issues, and have a voice in the direction of the county and state.
In addition to the county positions, the following state positions will be up for re-election: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor, State Treasurer, the state senate, and the state legislature. The fees for filing for these positions are below:
Governor - $536.00
Lieutenant Governor - $509.20
Attorney General - $509.20
State Treasurer - $509.20
State Auditor - $509.20
Utah Senator - $29.20
Utah House of Representatives - $14.60
Questions about filing for these positions can be directed to Teresa Lake at the Morgan County Offices. Teresa’s phone number is: 801-845-4012. Take time to get involved and help shape the future of Morgan county.
Next week is also the caucuses for the political parties. The Democratic Party caucus night is Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. The Republican Party caucus night is Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The Constitution Party caucus night is Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
The caucuses are the heart of representative government and select the leadership that will represent the county at the state level for each party. It’s a great way to learn and do our part in helping government work.
