Communities and other law enforcers across the state mourn the loss of one of the police officers that died in a shooting that happened in Ogden earlier last week. The officer, Jared Francom (who was shot and killed in the tragic 6 officer shooting in Ogden) parents were originally from Morgan.
He is the son of Jade Francom and Shelly Moser (who lived in Mountain Green at one point, and attended Morgan High School.) Jared was a much loved and respected officer and husband and father. Jared was a special task force officer, killed during the shooting that occurred on Wed. Jan. 4, 2012. There were 5 other officers were also shot at and critically injured. Those officers were Nate Hutchinson, Weber Co. Sheriff’s Office, Shawn Grogan, Ogden Police Dept., Jason Vanderwarf, Roy Police Dept., Kasey Burrell, Ogden Police Dept., Michael Rounkles, Ogden Police Dept.
A funeral was held in honor of Officer Jared Francom on Wed. Jan. 11, 2012 at the Dee Event Center. An estimate of 4,000 people were in attendance to pay tribute to Jared, who lost his life in the line of duty.
In attendance was Officer Shawn Grogan who was wounded in the same incident. Grogan was brought to the funeral in an ambulance, and escorted in a wheelchair by a local paramedic/firefighter from Morgan, Ashley Phillips along with his wife and other officers.
Gov. Gary Herbert also attended the ceremony as well as Sen. Mike Lee, Rep. Rob Bishop, and members of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and many sheriffs and police forces from around the state of Utah.
In respect and honor for Francom’s service and for paying the ultimate sacrifice, an American Flag was draped over Francom’s casket.
There will be a fund raiser on Jan. 14 to benefit all the victims and their families at the Golden Spike Outdoor Event Center. It will be a demolition derby called Crash for Cops, Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force Benefit. It starts at 1 p.m. Look for the ad in this week’s paper.
