Baseball team finishes successful season

Article Date:
3 May, 2013 (All day)

Last season, the Morgan varsity baseball team had one of its most successful seasons in recent history, going three games deep into the state playoffs and knocking off several 4A and 5A schools in non-region play.
After losing their ace pitcher and entire starting outfield to graduation in 2012, it appeared unlikely that the team’s success could be repeated.  Baseball pundits picked the team to finish in the basement of Region 11.
After dropping their first four non-region contests, it appeared that predictions might become reality.
Then came St. George, where the team captured third place in a tournament comprised of strong teams primarily from southern Utah.
From there, the Trojans continued to play excellent baseball, sweeping Tooele and Ben Lomond, taking the first meeting from Ogden and splitting series with perennial foes Bear River and Grantsville.
Coach Jeff Toller utilized numerous pitchers, especially during the early part of the season, in an effort to come up with a rotation that could throw strikes and keep hitters off balance.  Over the past few weeks, several seniors have stepped up in big ways.  Tanner Hales, Brenyn McConnell, Cameron Jarrett, Cameron Skinner and Lantzen Toomer have pitched in several critical games.
Heading into the last week of the season, the Trojans sit in third place (7-3 region record) and are looking forward to the playoffs, which begin May 10.
Varsity regulars include seniors Braden Brown (1B), Cam Jarrett (2B/P), Lantzen Toomer (SS/P), Brenyn McConnell (3B/P), Cam Skinner (OF/P), Kason Hansen (OF) and Tanner Hales (P, OF), juniors Kade Carrigan (C) and Mitch Wamsley (OF) and sophomores Jake Peterson (OF) and Tanner Johnson (P).
