Relay for Life is a big deal in Morgan County. Relay for Life is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to help raise funds for cancer research. All across the world people are affected by cancer in some way, and Morgan is no different. It seems that around every corner there is another tragic story. For this reason, the community rallies in support of this event. Windows of local businesses are filled with footprints that have been purchased to help the cause.
There was an annual Marie McQuiddy Daley softball tournament held this year in honor of Marie, who lost her battle with cancer on January 16, 2007. In remembrance of her fighting spirit and her strength, family members and friends joined up to make “Marie’s Messengers of Hope,” a Relay for Life team. They play to remember her and to fund cancer research and awareness so that other people have a better chance to fight this disease and win.
Tara Hammer, event chair, also hosted Relay Recess at Morgan Elementary to help her team. The school brought in an amazing $2,500 to support the cause. The money is used to fund research and gives students a sense of pride that they can accomplish something worthwhile; by looking beyond themselves. The Gold family team, TNT Dynamite, have been participating for four years. The team held an annual “Trees for Relay” sale this year. The 1st Bank team had their annual Relay for Life car wash, and in spite of the rain, had a pretty great turn-out. Our local Browning team has always been a huge supporter of this event as well. Team A.C.E has had a booth at almost every local event this summer. There have also been countless yard sales and fundraising events throughout the community.
The Relay committee would like to thank all the other teams for their efforts this year as well. These teams include, Big Brown Bears, The Bingham family, Burraston-Sommers, Davis Ed, Dessert First, Green Leaders, Konecny Bros. Lumber, Light for Life, LiquiFaction, London family, Moms and Pops, NHS, Robyn Nelson, S.L.Y., The Cancer League, The Giant Purple Cancer Eaters, The Misfits, Valiant Purple Hearts and Ye Old Bag. Thank you to all those who have participated in this year’s event either through holding the fundraisers or by attending them.
The committee would like to encourage all those who can attend the actual event to come and bid in the silent auction and support the various booths that will be set up by each team. Relay for Life will take place Aug. 10-11 from 6 p.m. – 6 a.m., and there will be entertainment the entire night for all ages. There will be a survivor dinner in the high school cafeteria at 4:15 p.m. and a survivor walk right after kick-off at 6 p.m. The dinner is free and all cancer survivors are encouraged to attend.
